Although the flora of the Caribbean islands is extraordinary, the fauna is actually relatively limited. However, it can be surprising, because there are some true specialities.
Most exceptional is the birdlife and in certain islands this is truly extraordinary. Trinidad, which is on migratory routes both north and south, has more species than the whole of Canada. Elsewhere many of the Windward Islands have an endemic parrot, now quite rare, but sometimes seen on rainforest walks. In most islands hummingbirds will flit in your garden while frigatebirds and pelicans soar overhead. You will even find bananaquits and cling-clings raiding your breakfast table.
While large animals are limited on land, you can join trips to see whales and dolphins off several islands. Also turtles nest on certain beaches all over the region and this is always worth going to see if you hear of it. There are even alligators on view in some larger islands. And then there are a few truly wonderful experiences. The Phosphorescent Lake in Vieques, Puerto Ricois one of the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena in the world.
Lastly there are well trained guides in some of the islands who will take you for a hike in the rainforest. They bring the whole place alive with stories about the different animals and plants, their origins and local medicinal and other uses. For more information about this, select the island that interests you below and choose the 'Nature' and 'Hiking' sections.
