| Key Features Saba is a small and extremely quiet and mountainous island, not that well known and quite hard to access (mainly via St Maarten), English and Dutch speaking. Real island charm with extremely pretty houses and gracious islanders. No beaches to speak of but good natural life onshore with hiking and excellent scuba diving. A handful of small and charming, very low key hotels, most with island character, some less expensive guest houses, and some private villas. Just a few restaurants and bars. Ideal for independent travellers interested in the traditional Caribbean. | | |
Accommodation In keeping with the island’s gracious and generally serene atmopshere, Saba’s accommodation has real charm. It consists mostly of small hotels - there is nowhere on the island with more than fifteen rooms (and certainly no big beach resorts) – which themselves contribute to the charm. They tend to have a very friendly atmosphere and attractive settings - several inns are set in pretty wooden creole buildings. Actually, even those that are in modern buildings are quite attractive anyway (helped by the fact that they have red roofs and gingerbread trim and are surrounded by greenery). Accommodation in Saba is concentrated largely around the two main centres, Windwardside and The Bottom, so you will very likely be at the heart of the (admittedly quiet) action. However, in such steep terrain, accommodation that is actually not far off can feel suprisingly tucked away. Some places have exceptional views.
Most of the accommodation in Saba is inns and guest houses, attached to some central facilities including a dining room, bar and possibly a swimming pool. If you would like to be a little more independent then there are some private villas for rent on the island as well as some very pretty cottages attached to the hotels and (very small scale) developments. Because scuba diving in Saba is such a popular activity, many of the hotels offer a dive package.
Hotels & Resorts In keeping with the calm and low key atmosphere of the island (and the steep geography and lack of sand), there are no large hotels or beachfront resorts in Saba.
Small Hotels & Inns Saba’s inns and small hotels are the island’s main strength. Some have a great deal of charm, set in attractive gingerbread buildings, and atmosphere. For an island that is relatively simple there is some good comfort and some stylish design.
