| Key Features Three mid-size islands (and 70 small ones) in the Virgin Islands archipelago, each with a very different character, easy access from USA (harder from Europe). A territory of the United States, very ‘American’ in style (compared to the rest of the Caribbean), English-speaking, with some Spanish. Extensive tourism from mid to near top end, generally excellent beaches, cruise ship traffic, good service.
ST THOMAS is the busiest and most developed island, excellent air services, extremely active cruise ship port with extensive shopping. Many resort hotels, a handful of small, independent places to stay (including some inns in Charlotte Amalie), some villas, some self-catering apartments, good restaurants, very lively nightlife, golf.
ST JOHN is a 20 minute ferry ride from St Thomas (no airstrip), far quieter and less developed, much of the island is national park and completely untouched. A small number of resort hotels, some mid-price properties, just a couple of simple places to stay, but several camp sites. Some nice restaurants in Cruz Bay, some good bars, sailing, nice remote beaches.
ST CROIX is usually accessed direct by air (independently of St Thomas, though there is a ferry link), also considerable cruise ship business, casinos (one of just a few islands that have them). Less built up. Some resort hotels and several inns, in town and on the beach, some visible history in the very attractive towns and plantations, golf.
