Medical
In a medical emergency you should contact the Hopital Canapé Vert, rue Canapé Vert, Port au Prince, t 245 1052, t 223 0984. Most hotels have an English speaking doctor on call.

Medical facilities and services are scarce and generally below western standards. Serious cases require air evacuation and medical facilities often expect immediate cash payment. It is strongly recommended to obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling to Haiti.

There is a risk of malaria throughout the year in certain forest areas. Mosquito repellent is essential and you should take a preventative medicine against malaria. Sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhoea and HIV are prevalent and a serious problem on the island. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from infected areas.

Eat only washed and peeled fruit, cooked vegetables, and well cooked meat and fish. You are advised not to drink the water in Haiti or buy the iced drinks off the streets. Purified water is easily available in the shops.

There are no nude beaches on Haiti and locals would take offence to any kind of public nudity.
