Medical
Most hotels and resorts on the Dominican Republic have English speaking medical staff that can handle minor needs. There are several clinics and physicians’ offices located on the island if vacationers need more serious medical attention.

If you are unlucky enough in your holiday to need them, medical facilities for major incidents can be found in Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. Clinica Abreu, t 688 441 and Clinica Gomez Patino, t 685 9131, both on Avenida Independencia in Santo Domingo have 24 hour casualty rooms. Grupo Medico Dr Bournigal, t 586 2342, the major clinic in Puerto Plata is also open 24 hours. It will be very important to have insurance if you attend one of these clinics.

Do not drink unpurified tap water in the Dominican Republic. Make sure you stock up on purified water when in the towns if planning a trip to more remote areas. Avoid swimming in fresh water lakes, streams and rivers as fresh bodies of water may be contaminated.

Be aware that HIV is a major problem in the Dominican Republic, fuelled by the sex tourism industry.

Nudity
Caliente Caribe Resort (formerly Eden Bay) near Puerto Plata is an all inclusive naturist resort and has its own private nude beach.

In general, topless bathing is quite common around the large tourist beaches that see European visitors, but you will rarely find the locals partaking.
