Key Features Dominica is extremely mountainous and immensely green and fertile, but not that well known. The least developed of the Windward Islands, it has a strong local life, with lively English and French Creole speakers and it is not that easy to reach (access is via Puerto Rico, Antigua, Martinique or Guadeloupe). It has just a few white sand beaches in the north-east, but mostly grey volcanic sand on the northern leeward (western) coastline. Superb natural life though, some fauna, particularly flora in the rainforest and in gardens, also marine life for good scuba, otherwise limited watersports, but excellent hiking, rainforest trails and waterfalls. Just a few generally inexpensive hotels and inns, inland as well as on the shore and near Roseau, local restaurants in town, some visible history, last survivors of the original Caribbean inhabitants, the Caribs. Ideal for independent travellers who want to discover an older Caribbean. |
