Description
Villa Gelatini is a very comfortable, modern three-bedroom house set in the prosperous residential area of L’Anse aux Epines in the south of Grenada. It sits high on a hill in large and well kept tropical gardens, from where it has views all around, west towards the sunset and to the east and north, over Grenada’s meandering coastline, which rises into furred green flanks into the mountains behind.

After winding past the large homes of L’Anse aux Epines, you arrive at Villa Gelatini to be greeted by an electric main gate. This leads into a parking area, but there is actually a garage at Villa Gelatini. Originally the house was built as a private home for a prominent Grenadian businessman and it has been finished to a high, modern specification. There is not really much of a West Indian feel to it – it has a slight Latin American touch with light pink walls and rounded clay roof tiles - but it is very comfortable and spacious. In addition, the villa has excellent levels of service, with two members of staff. You will be looked after extremely well by the housekeeper and cook Evangeline and Reela.

The villa is laid out in a U shape, with the two arms gathering a sitting area and the swimming pool, which give onto lawned gardens at the front of the house. You enter the villa at bottom of the U. The bedrooms are in the left hand wing and the working area of the villa (the kitchen and the self-contained flat for the live-in staff) is on the right. In the middle straight ahead you can see out through French doors onto the pool terrace.

You actually enter a large split-level sitting and dining area, which has a slightly formal air. The floor is laid with dark ceramic tiles, there are full length curtains and the white walls are decorated with prints in gold frames. The furniture, as almost throughout the house, is made of cane. It is covered with light but smart material. There are plants in pots and vases. The windows are large and let in plenty of light - as well as air. Set so high, Villa Gelatini catches the passing breeze and the living areas do not need to be air-conditioned. The bedrooms are air-conditioned (and also have ceiling fans), as are the two smaller rooms, the TV room and the study.

The upper level of the living room is the more formal sitting area and it has cane armchairs and a small chandelier. Separated from it by a wrought iron balustrade and a couple of steps down is the dining room and another sitting area. Here there are cane sofas, a soft armchair and a tape and CD stereo system. The dining table can seat eight and has straight backed chairs made of dark wood. There is a dark sideboard against the wall. A doorway leads into the kitchen.

The three bedrooms all lead off a corridor from the upper section of the living room. The first bedroom you come to is the master, which is large and has its own sitting area, sectioned off by an archway. The room is carpeted and furnished with woven cane - a chest of drawers, bedside tables, chairs and headboards in the shape of a fan. There is a walk-in hanging cupboard and a large bathroom with double vanities and a bathtub as well as a shower. The two other bedrooms are also along the corridor. One is a double room, the other has twin beds that can be put together to make another double. The twin room is decorated in bright yellow and white. They both have showers in the bathrooms and the same cane furniture, headboards and formal curtains.

On the other side of the corridor from the bedrooms you come to two other rooms, first a TV room with a small library and then a small office. This contains a desk with internet access and a fax machine. It looks out onto the gardens over a terrace. Surrounded by a wooden balustrade with a sunburst pattern, the terrace runs the full width of this end of the house. It is a good place to sit out and has some cane armchairs and a hammock in a frame.

The side of the terrace overlooks the pool, which then hugs the side of the house, in the sheltered ‘courtyard’ between the ‘wings’. It is about twenty-five feet long by ten. The courtyard is laid with crazy paving and decorated with hanging greenery and plants. Usually it is accessed off the dining room and kitchen area. Tucked into the corner of the U, just outside the main living room, is a dining table under a parasol where breakfast is usually served. Farther out there are wooden garden chairs and next to the pool there are loungers with another parasol so that you can escape the sun in the middle of the day. Here the terrace gives out onto lawn, from which there is a view across the bay.

Beach & Swimming
Villa Gelatini is set on one of the highest hills in this area and so it is not on the beach. L'Anse aux Epines beach is a couple of minutes drive away and Grande Anse and the beaches of the Point Salines peninsular are about ten minutes away.

The pool is set in the courtyard between the two wings of the house, outside the TV room. It is 10ft by about 25ft and wider at the garden end. There are steps into the shallow end.

Sports & Recreation
There is a 9-hole golf course about ten minutes drive away. Scuba diving is available through several dive shops on Grand Anse and deep sea fishing can easily be arranged too. It is possible to arrange for a massage therapist to come to your villa.

Locality
L’Anse aux Epines is mainly a residential area, but there are some small hotels and quite a few other holiday homes. There is a small mini-mart nearby but for a larger supermarket you should go to Grand Anse. St George’s, the capital of Grenada, is about fifteen minutes drive. It is the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean and well worth a visit. There are a few restaurants within a short drive, on the road that leads into the L’Anse aux Epines area. For a smart meal try the Gary Rhodes restaurant at the Calabash just a short walk away and for something less formal the Red Crab.

If you have booked direct through Spice Isle Villas, you will be picked up at the airport on arrival and brought to the villa. The transfer takes about ten minutes. You will then be briefed about Villa Gelatini and offered a complimentary welcome meal by the cook, Reela.

If you book this villa in a flight-inclusive package through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of the holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Hiring a car to explore the island is easily arranged and is a great addition to a stay in Grenada. You can travel to the remoter beaches and the island’s many excellent beach bars, and eat out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. You will also have to collect groceries, so we recommend a car with all villa-based holidays.

We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company,
Y&R Car Rentals) or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the hotel. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, as well as during August and Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.

Buses do run to the area, particularly in the morning (7.30-8.30am) as staff arrive at work and again in the afternoon as they leave (3-4pm), but they are infrequent otherwise. Elsewhere in Grenada, on the main road routes, the bus service is generally frequent and rapid.
