Description
Tivigny House is a stylish modern villa built in a striking mix of off-white adobe plasterwork, tropical hardwoods and glass. It sits on a secluded hillside on the south coast of Grenada in a commanding position above Clarke’s Court Bay, where yachts sit quietly among the finger-spits of land and islands furred with tropical greenery. The house is very comfortable, a cleverly designed Grenada vacation villa that is ideal for tropical living.

The house is about twenty minutes drive to the east of Grand Anse and L’Anse aux Epines along the twisting south coast road. You approach via the road above Clarke’s Court Bay itself, turning eventually onto a rough track that leads out to a quiet and pleasantly remote peninsular. Tivigny House appears on your left, set above the track and bay, tall and imposing against the hillside.

You enter the house at the main living level, passing through the ‘tower’ that contains the three bedrooms and emerging into the main living area. This is actually on three levels, like terraces, that face the bay. The kitchen and dining room are at the top at the rear of the house, beneath them is a covered veranda and just below that, fully open to the magnificent view, is the infinity pool. The layout of the living space at Tivigny House is all about getting the best of this view – down to glass balusters in the wooden balustrade, so that it is not interrupted from the kitchen.

Tivigny House has a whole compendium of architectural styles. Look one way in the kitchen and you can feel Latin America in the earthy tiles, rounded arches and the hardwood beams stark on white plasterwork, then in another direction there is minimal and modern style in the shape of the balustrades and inlaid glass, and of course there is the Caribbean in the green tin roofs, even old West Indian plantation style in the polished wooden floors and the louvers of the bedrooms. The hardwoods are most strikingly used. You will find mahogany in louvers, doors and window frames, Guyanese purpleheart in the interior floors and balustrades, and on the exterior surfaces greenheart, also from Guyana, which copes well with the weather.

As you come into the main living area, the kitchen and dining room are above you to the right. It is divided into a working and a dining area by a long island with a tiled worktop - though the working surfaces themselves are invisible behind a raised hardwood bar. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, with a range and oven, a fridge freezer, toaster, coffee maker. It is carefully presented too, with chrome appliances hard by the flinty-coloured tiled surfaces. On the other side of the island is the dining table, which seats six or eight, with formal wicker dining chairs, their seats covered in a light material. While the main set of stairs to the upper bedrooms is in the ‘tower’, a second staircase leads out of the back of the kitchen.

Just beneath the dining area, over the glass balustrade, you come to the veranda level, through a set of louvered French doors. Here the view begins to open up, carrying over the pool and into the bay beyond. The veranda itself, roof supported by occasional pillars in Y-shaped ‘hangman’ style, is made from greenheart wood. It is a nice place to sit out and you will find some metal garden furniture there and some wicker armchairs. On the next level down is the pool, which is ideal for lounging in and of course taking in the full extent of the view. To one side of the pool there is an open-air shower and a tiled deck with loungers. This is shaded for much of the day by the bedroom tower behind it.

One bedroom is at the pool level and there are two on the floor above. On the lower floor is a garage. The bedrooms at Tivigny are decorated in lean and elegant style. They have polished wooden floors made of purpleheart, louvered mahogany French doors and some reproduction tropical antique furniture. Curtains are hung on slender metal hangers and there are muslin nets hanging over the wicker headboards. The fabrics - bedspreads, chair covers and cushions - are brightly coloured. They were produced in Trinidad, the island close by.

The two principal bedrooms, which sit one above the other, are laid out in a similar plan. They have huge French doors opening onto balconies on two sides, to the main view in the west and onto the central living area of the house. The lower room, a double that can be split into twins, leads straight onto the pool deck, and the room above it (which has a king size bed) gives onto a very pretty wooden upper walkway and deck shared with the third bedroom. Set behind, this also has twin beds. All the bedrooms have fans and louvers if you prefer natural ventilation, but they can be closed up and air-conditioned. Each room has its own bathroom, with stylish round porcelain basins in pairs on a tiled surface and slender metal taps. The king bedroom has a bath-tub.

Although the heart of the villa is really the series of ‘terraced’ living rooms - the dining room/kitchen, the veranda and the pool - there is actually another room where you are likely to spend time too. The indoor living room is just beyond the kitchen, on the same level as the veranda. It has large louvered French doors that let in plenty of light and a similarly relaxed feel to the rest of the house. It is furnished with white sofas and colourful cushions around a low table made from African railway sleepers. You will find a piano, a couple of bookshelves and an entertainment centre with satellite TV and a DVD with a small library. The music system has surround-sound and speakers that can be separately controlled at the pool and veranda. The house is wired for internet. This room in turn gives onto an outside dining deck which is shaded by vines.

Tivigny House was designed by British architect Michael Helm, who has also worked in the British Virgin Islands farther north in the Caribbean . Here he has created a luxurious Grenada vacation villa which is stylish but which also has great ‘liveability’, where you will enjoy a feeling of well designed space and of course the superb view. The name of the house is also an expression of Grenada and its tangled French heritage. In it you can hear traditional Grenadian Creole. The Ti (‘tee’) is from Petit and Vigny (‘veenee’) comes from Calivigny, the local area.

Beach & Swimming
There is a very quiet section of grey sand down below the villa on Clarke’s Court Bay. It is calm and protected and there is a jetty in the bay from which you can swim. There is occasional activity in the bay but it is generally very quiet.

A short drive to the east you will find other beaches with some facilities. Two particularly nice ones, each with their own small hotel, are Petit Bacaye and La Sagesse. If you head in the other direction you come to the island’s best known beaches, at Grand Anse and the lovely coves on the Point Salines peninsular.

There is an infinity pool, 28 feet by 15, just below the kitchen. It can be fenced if you have children. There are stools built into the pool and a bar where you can leave a drink on the ‘house’ side, but you are more likely to sit looking in the other direction and admire the view.

Sports & Recreation
Tivigny House has two kayaks and lifejackets with which you can explore the bay. There are inlets and islands with their own small sections of sand and there is a circular reef not far off the jetty and other smaller sections of reef around the edges of the bay. You might also look at the mangroves, which have a whole extraordinary life of their own. Mangroves are the home of many fish when they are young. There is snorkelling gear at the villa.

Locality
Tivigny House is set in the Clarke’s Court Bay area of Grenada, which is to the east of Point Salines and L’Anse aux Epines along the meandering southern coastline. You pass through a small community near the head of the bay, but by the time you reach the house itself you are in undeveloped countryside, which is good to explore. There are usually a few yachts at anchor in the bay, which are generally avoiding the activity of the tourist centres rather than looking for it.

Back in the small community you will find the Little Dipper, a nice restaurant set on a pretty deck above the bay which serves typical Caribbean food. Beyond here, heading east, you will find two delightful small hotels with beach bars, Petit Bacaye and then La Sagesse. In the other direction, it is about twenty minutes drive to the main centres of tourist activity in Grenada, the beaches and bars of the Point Salines area, the south-western peninsular, and then Grand Anse, the busiest ‘tourist’ area. St George’s is about 25 minutes drive away.

Useful Hints
Tivigny is a relatively long way east along the south coast of Grenada so you should be happy to be self contained. It is quiet and ‘activity’ is a drive away.

Getting Around
We recommend a car with every Grenada vacation villa rental, but when staying at Tivigny House you will definitely need one, or possibly two. They will enable you to explore the island, travelling to the beaches and beach bars along this stretch of the coast and eating out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. Of course you will also have to collect groceries.

We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company,
Y&R Car Rentals) or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the villa. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, and during August and at Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.
