Description St Remy is a St Lucia private rental hidden away in the incredibly lush hills to the rear of the majestic Pitons, mid-way down St Lucia’s western coast. The estate house of a former cocoa plantation, it is surrounded by a virtual botanical garden, with a profusion of lush and colourful plant life that includes orchids, heliconia, lilies and an abundance of fruit trees, even a herb garden. All of these have been lovingly tended for over twenty five years by the resident gardener so if anyone is interested in the vibrant gardens and exotic flora of St Lucia, this might be a good St Lucia private rental choice. St Remy is also a fantastic tropical retreat for anyone looking for a sense of the romance of the old West Indies, as well as nature lovers looking for somewhere to escape for some peace and quiet.
The estate house, which is over 160 years old, is a charming, restored Creole style house built mainly out of wood. It is painted a fresh white and yellow. Traditional features include white painted wooden louvred windows and doors, scrubbed wooden floors, a wide wrap-around veranda with wooden balustrades and intricate fretwork all painted white. It is classic Caribbean gingerbread. Inside, the large open plan living and dining room has been furnished with the occasional antique and in a traditional manner befitting the style of property. A series of louvred doors open out onto the covered veranda, where guests can sit and relax in time-honoured tradition, on one of the rocking chairs. A well equipped kitchen is located off the dining area and also has access to the veranda.
Just below the veranda, steps lead down to the paved pool terrace which has a good size swimming pool that is raised slightly above the surrounding lawns. An extended terrace to the head of the pool has a permanent shingle wooden sun shade. You can dine alfresco by the pool and take in the uninterrupted views of the St Lucia rainforest beyond.
St Remy has two double bedrooms. They are located to the rear of the living area, a master bedroom with antique four poster bed and the second bedroom with an antique mahogany bedstead. There are two bathrooms, one with shower only and one with tub/shower. A small chattel house style guest house with twin beds is located in the gardens and is available by special request. |

Beach & Swimming The nearest beach is Malgretoute, which is about fifteen minutes by car off the road to Soufrière, and is located just north of the Petit Piton. There is a small curve of silvery, dark volcanic sand and pebble beach, a beach bar called Harmony’s at one end. It is popular with locals at weekends. Anse Chastanet beach is located on the other side of Soufrière (another 10-15 minutes) and is known for its excellent snorkelling and diving. Or you can go to the Jalousie Plantation. The swimming pool at St Remy is a traditional oblong shape with a short shallow end with entry steps, dropping sharply into the deep end. |

Sports & Recreation The Scuba diving in this area of St Lucia is excellent. To dive St Lucia we recommend Dive Fair Helen who pick up at Soufrière. Dive Fair Helen also offer kayaking and hiking tours and certainly if you are a hiker there also are good opportunities in this area of St Lucia, mainly in the rainforest inland from Soufrière. You might also consider a walk up the Gros Piton (Petit Piton is much steeper and you have to climb in some areas, which should only be attempted in the company of a proper guide), which has become a regular trip. There are several mountain biking trails at Anse Chastanet. For something a little less energetic, there are spas at Anse Chastanet Hotel and at the Jalousie Plantation. |

Locality St Remy is located within the St Lucia rainforest region in the mountains to the south of the quaint town of Soufrière, a town where little seems to have changed over the last century. The villa provides a great base from which to explore the St. Lucia cultural background and enjoy St. Lucia island tours. There is a supermarket in town, but be aware that stocks are limited. Fresh fruit and vegetables are available from the waterfront market on Saturdays, and freshly caught fish for trying out your St Lucia recipes. The ‘drive-in’ volcano is close by, and is worth a visit for the curiosity at least, and there are a couple of botanical gardens nearby, at Fond Doux Estate in the hills and at Diamond behind Soufrière. The nearest restaurant of note is Dasheen at Ladera Resort, about ten minutes by car, which serves excellent contemporary Caribbean cuisine and is very popular – arguably one of the best restaurants in St Lucia not least of all for its dramatic view. During the day it is a wonderful spot to enjoy the spectacular views of the Pitons, which have recently been declared a World Heritage Site. At Stonefield, the Mango Tree also has wonderful views. In Soufrière itself there is the Old Courthouse restaurant on the waterfront. |

Useful Hints Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival so that the cook/housekeeper can prepare a simple welcome meal should this be required. A starter food pack costs approximately US$40 per person, however due to its location and the fact that the supermarket in Soufrière has a limited range of supplies, you might wish to request a more substantial stock of food be placed in the villa, which the owner will arrange from Castries. Your housekeeper does not have transportation so would not be able to go out for groceries, however she would be happy to assist you when you go out to do your shopping. Rental rates for villas in St Lucia do not include ‘tips’, about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.
Personal laundry is not included in the rental rates and charges are approximately as follows: machine wash small load EC$10, hand wash small load EC$25 and ironing small load EC$25. |

Getting Around A hired car is strongly recommended for all St Lucia villas, unless you would prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A vehicle will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Drive-A-Matic (Tropical Villas will book this for you) or Cool Breeze Car & Jeep Rentals for your St Lucia car rental and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately 3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on St Lucia or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
