Description Senderlea is a magical Caribbean retreat that is literally hidden away from view right on the Barbados West Coast. Although it is just off the main West Coast road on Barbados, one would hardly imagine finding such a delightful setting behind its walled entrance. The Derricks area of St James is best known for its top knotch restaurants such as the Cliff, which is just down the road and can be seen from the gardens. Senderlea, like the Cliff, is located on the edge of a sea cliff, which has been used to great advantage. On entering Senderlea, once you shut the front gate, you seem to enter a completely different, secluded world, one of secret gardens and fairy grottos. The driveway is enchanting and has vine covered, green trellised walls with mature plants leading to the villa’s entrance, opposite which sits a bench under a shady pergola. Apart from the visual impact of such greenery, there is something else in the air, and as you walk towards Senderlea’s entrance the intoxicating fragrance of jasmine that frames the doorway fills the air and makes for a memorable welcome.
Senderlea is a gracious, old style Barbadian house with a traditional covered veranda that is reached by a double stairway. It has been refurbished quite recently to a very high standard, and is a true retreat with character, which makes a change from the glamorous yet sometimes soulless newer properties that abound. On entering the restrained but elegantly furnished drawing room it is apparent that this is a gracious and grown up villa. Carefully chosen pieces of antique furniture are dotted around, such as a hand painted cream French display cabinet which matches the cream upholstered sofa and various chairs. The interior of the villa is somewhat shady with a cool and welcoming feel about it that barely hints at the wonderful views outside. Adjoining the drawing room is a formal dining room which features a large distressed French antique side board and decorated dining table that seats up to eight people. An alcove displays various collectables and there is a very handsome looking antique wine chiller.
A central passageway in the villa leads from the drawing and dining rooms to a spacious, very well equipped kitchen and a laundry room. Just off the dining room is an air-conditioned media room with cable TV, VCR, stereo and fax machine. To the rear a good size second bedroom has a double bed with distressed wood headboard and cabinets and a rather exotic bedspread depicting parrots. There is a roomy en suite bathroom with grey marble topped vanity and large step-in tiled shower. The charming Master bedroom is located to the side of the drawing room and has a king size bed with a lovely carved headboard in a distressed pale wood, with cream brocade spread, and matching off white décor throughout. The bedroom leads out through louvered doors onto the covered veranda and has an en suite bathroom with double marble vanity and a large glass tiled shower. Both bedrooms feature hairdryers.
The covered veranda is the most commonly used living area of the villa and has a very comfortable sitting area at one end with attractive pickle pine, carved seating and coffee table, whilst the other side is used for dining. There are lovely views across the gardens and pool to the Caribbean Sea and on afternoons, should the sun become too intense, there are white cotton drapes which can be drawn to provide shade. Steps lead down into the gardens, which are gorgeous, meticulously kept and brimming with a huge variety of tropical plants. A coral stone paved terrace surrounds an inviting free form swimming pool, and set amongst the trees overlooking the beach below is the heated Jacuzzi. From here there are terrific views up the West Coast. This must be one of the most romantic spots for enjoying a ‘sundowner’ whilst looking out for the green flash. Nearby, a pretty wooden gazebo provides another dining area for up to eight people.
Just below the villa, almost lost against the greenery, a small wrought iron table with a couple of chairs makes for a perfect spot for afternoon tea. If this were not enough, a private stairway leads down the limestone sea cliff to a beach deck, which has been built to overlook the beach and sea below, providing an alternative and very special spot for sunbathing. Steps continue down onto the cove below, which is picture perfect. |

Beach & Swimming Beach access is by way of private stairway from the bottom of the gardens down the sea cliff, along a sun deck and then further steps down. A relatively secluded cove has a fabulous stretch of white sandy beach, with excellent swimming and snorkelling. Senderlea has a lovely free form pool measuring 15ft by 10ft 8” with depths of 3ft to 6ft with steps down the shallow end, plus a heated outdoor Jacuzzi. |

Locality Senderlea is located directly off the main West Coast road just south of Paynes Bay. The closest hotel is Crystal Cove and Sandy Lane is approximately 10 minutes drive north. At Paynes Bay (around 6 minutes drive) you will find a Texaco service station which also sells snacks and groceries. From here, a short drive up Holders Hill will take you up to the Barbados Polo Club. A ten minute drive will get you to the heart of St James and the nearest shopping district, Holetown. Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening. Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.
There is a host of restaurants ranging from posh to pizzas within 15 minutes drive in either direction of Senderlea, from the celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 15 minutes north, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take less than 3 minutes - also look out for Scarlet and Daphne’s in this direction. You might also consider Calabaza about 5 minutes to the south. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s. |

Getting Around Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown can easily be reached by public transport, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
