Royal Plantation has a delightful mix of traditional Jamaica and a more modern Caribbean hospitality. The hotel is set on a clifftop in extensive gardens just east of Ocho Rios on the island’s north coast. As you arrive, via a huge neo-classical portico, you enter a wood-panelled foyer with a marble floor and antique furniture. The hotel dates from 1957, but there is no question of a fusty old colonial air to the place. Instead, there is an upbeat, modern Caribbean style and service. Royal Plantation has a spa, a caviar and champagne bar and butler service to the beach. The suites (it has only suites), have some colonial style decoration, but it has been jazzed up. Royal Plantation is a new generation in the Sandals group of hotels no longer bound by the all inclusive formula. It operates as a top-notch, room only hotel with an all-inclusive Royal Plan option. It is also a member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World.
