Review Nutmeg Bay Villa sits among the twists and turns of L’Anse aux Epines peninsular in the south of Grenada, overlooking a lagoon and the sea in the distance. It is a large and modern house, painted canary yellow and has quite a grand feel. Two ‘wings’ sit either side of a central atrium and raised roof, with classical columns, stepped keystones at the corners, carriage lanterns and criss-cross balustrades. Of course the main thrust of the villa is modern comfort and so Nutmeg Bay is well designed for tropical living. All of the bedrooms give out onto the sitting and pool deck, from where there is a view over the gardens and on to the lagoon. There is a large garden and good ‘space’, ideal for entertaining, making it suitable for a large family, a wedding or even a small corporate retreat.
On arrival at Nutmeg Bay you turn into a drive bordered on one side by tropical trees and bushes and on the others by two wings of the house – the villa is laid out in a star pattern, with three wings in all. You are drawn in to the front door and step inside into a high-ceilinged hall. This is extremely bright because it opens directly, through flattened arches, into two other rooms and the light is allowed to flood through.
To your left you will find the dining room, where there is a table large enough for ten. This has an elegant feel, with a pitched wooden ceiling and exposed beams and grand, gathered curtains. Leading off the dining room, divided from it by a breakfast bar, is the kitchen. This is very well equipped, with a large fridge freezer, a drinks and wine chiller and a large range with multiple ovens and a griddle. It also has a dishwasher, microwave, juice press and filter coffee machine.
The main part of the house faces the other way, towards the south and the lagoon. From the hall you step into the main living room, which is also has tall ceilings. High up on the wall a half rose window and a line of square skylights allow the light in. The room is furnished with plants in urns and with wooden chairs made of white cedar by Rudolf Hererra, the Grenadian furniture maker. The walls are decorated with large modern prints in gold and yellow and a metalwork chandelier hangs between the ceiling fans from above. The sitting room can be air-conditioned, but because it is so large it is more usually left open to the air - while the doors to the bedroom corridors, which lead off the sitting room either side, are kept closed. There is a large stereo system and a cable TV with 50 channels. Wireless internet link is available through the house and in the bedrooms.
While the living room is comfortable, the main focus of the house is really the pool deck just outside, which is reached by three sets of French doors. The area is framed on either side by the two bedroom wings (all the bedrooms open onto it) and as well as plenty of space for sunbathing it has some shaded sitting and eating areas. As you step outside from the living room you first come into a covered area, a tiled semi-circular deck with a roof supported on classical pillars. There is some wooden garden furniture on the deck, so it makes a good retreat in the heat of the day. On the roof above is another area for sunbathing which is accessed by a circular staircase. Looking out, steps down take you to the pool level, where there are loungers.
The pool itself is shaped in a half moon and it has an infinity edge giving onto the lawned gardens and the bay. At either end of the pool there is a gazebo. These are open-sided, with criss-cross balustrades and pretty pointed shingle roofs. One gazebo is set with a dining table and the other, outside the master bedroom, makes another good retreat from the height of the sun. Below the pool deck the gardens are fairly open. The lawns are bordered by a white picket fence, beyond which, across the road, is the lagoon and a small dark-sand beach, partially hidden by mangroves.
Back inside the house, the five bedrooms are set in two wings, three on one side (the one that backs onto the car park) and two on the other. They are a good size and have en suite bathrooms with showers (rather than bathtubs) and each has a door opening onto the pool deck. They are also furnished with wooden pieces by Rudolf Hererra, chests of drawers and tables decorated with arrow and diamond patterns.
The master bedroom is at the end of the southern corridor. It has a low, wooden king-size bed and is decorated in mid-brown tones. It opens onto a gazebo. The two bedrooms next door to it are the most suitable for children. They have twin beds and are decorated brightly, one in yellow and red and the other in blues. On the other side of the house are two more bedrooms, with queen-sized beds. Both are decorated in lilac and blue. A sixth bedroom is located in a self-contained guest cottage, adjacent to the main house.
The housekeeper at Nutmeg Bay is Cicelin, who is in attendance six days a week. In addition to general cleaning she will do your laundry and if requested in advance she can baby-sit. If you need help with catering, there is a good local company that will produce meals according to an extensive men as well as help with food and staff if you wish to entertain. |

Beach & Swimming The pool at Nutmeg Bay is shaped in a semi-circle with steps into the inside of the curve. It has an infinity edge overlooking the garden and the bay. It is central to life in the villa. The living room and all the bedrooms are ranged in a line looking out onto the pool terrace and they all have doors giving access onto it. The pool is chlorine-free.
Just across the road from the villa is a small beach (not called Nutmeg Bay), which is very natural but little used. There is good protected swimming there. The closest recognised beach is L’Anse aux Epines, which is at the head of Prickly Bay just a couple of minutes drive away. Also, it is not far to Grand Anse and the beaches along the Point Salines peninsular. |

Sports & Recreation There is a 9-hole golf course about fifteen minutes drive away. Scuba diving is available through several dive shops on Grand Anse and deep sea fishing can easily be arranged too. It is possible to arrange for a massage therapist to come to your villa. |

Locality Nutmeg Bay is set in the mainly residential area of L’Anse aux Epines in the south of Grenada. There is a small mini-mart in the immediate vicinity but otherwise you will have to go to Grand Anse to find larger supermarkets. St George’s, the capital of Grenada, is about fifteen minutes drive away. It is the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean and well worth a visit. There are a few restaurants within a short drive, on the road that leads into the L’Anse aux Epines area. For a smart meal try the Gary Rhodes restaurant at the Calabash and for something less formal the Red Crab. |

Getting Around Hiring a car to explore the island is easily arranged and is a great addition to a stay in Grenada. You can travel to the remoter beaches and the island’s many excellent beach bars, and eat out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. You will also have to collect groceries, so we recommend a car with all villa-based holidays.
We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company, Y&R Car Rentals) or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the hotel. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, as well as during August and Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.
Buses do run to the area, particularly in the morning (7.30-8.30am) as staff arrive at work and again in the afternoon as they leave (3-4pm), but they are infrequent otherwise. Elsewhere in Grenada, on the main road routes, the bus service is generally frequent and rapid. |
