Description
An avenue of stately royal palms makes for an impressive arrival at this gracious beachfront home, which is one of the finest rental villas built recently on Barbados’s West Coast. Tucked into an acre of well landscaped, leafy gardens, Moon Reach is located in the popular Weston area near the Garden, which boasts a number of large estates and holiday homes as well as local homes.

Moon Reach offers an exclusive, restful retreat within easy reach of all the glitz and glamour that the West Coast is famous for, and the property features many traditional traits of Caribbean architecture and design, but they have been sharpened up to give them a contemporary edge. The fabric of the villa is coral stone which is complemented by a polished marble in a similar shade, which gives a cool and mellow feel. It has large jalousie arched wooden doorways, topped with elegant fanlights, which reveal magical views when pushed back.

The lower level of the villa consists of a large main hall. This is the formal sitting room and it has been elegantly furnished with groupings of extremely comfortable upholstered sofas and reading chairs. The décor throughout the property is kept to neutral tones, so that the interior, though beautifully done, does not detract from the views of the Caribbean Sea beyond. A series of shuttered doors open onto an equally well furnished covered veranda, with attractive wicker chairs and sofas, again in neutral shades, and a casual dining area. The veranda has views of the gardens, pool and Caribbean Sea directly in front. The formal dining room occupies the southern corner of the villa and has large louvered doors on three sides, enabling it to open out fully to the open air. Next to it, a wet bar is set in the corner of the veranda. A well equipped, staffed kitchen is located conveniently behind.

Moon Reach has most certainly been designed to make the best of its setting. All of the main social areas have views of the sea, which apart from the mature planting and trees, are uninterrupted. The main veranda, dining room and downstairs bedroom lead out into the well manicured gardens. Here, to the south of the house, there is a lovely lawn, and to the north the pool, its waterfall and surrounding tiled sun terrace. The garden is partially shaded by mature trees and coconut palms. A pathway leads down the middle of the gardens to an iron gate (the gardens are fully enclosed) and then onto the beach directly below. The villa’s grounds are slightly raised, giving guests slightly more privacy.

There are five spacious bedrooms at Moon Reach, all of which have sea views. They are fairly similar in style, but each is individually furnished. Four bedrooms are on the upper floor, each with a furnished balcony on the front of the building. The two inner bedrooms have a balcony directly in front, but the corner bedrooms, which are larger, are surrounded by wooden louvered doors and balcony on three sides, giving them side-views over the gardens as well as the ocean ahead. The fifth bedroom is downstairs on the northern corner of the house and is slightly smaller than the two middle bedrooms upstairs. It also has doors on three sides, which open onto the main veranda and onto steps that lead to the garden area in front of the pool. It has access into a small office that can also be reached from the main room. All of the bedrooms have king size beds, each in a different style. (One has a traditional polished mahogany bedstead with caned panels, one has a wrought iron four poster, two have white painted wooden bedsteads, and finally there is a cream bedstead with a lovely carved headboard in the French Antique style.) They are air-conditioned, have cable TV, DVD, a ceiling fan, a dressing area and a large en suite bathroom with separate power shower and a tub.

An air-conditioned (ceiling fan also) games room and gym is located in the grounds. It is equipped with a treadmill, rowing machine, multi-purpose weight machine, and a pool table, plus bathroom.

Beach & Swimming
Moon Reach is set directly on a strip of narrow white sandy beach, reached by a gate at the bottom of the garden, however the swimming directly in front of the house is rocky and you will need to walk a few yards to the left or right for a nice sandy spot to swim. The villa features a good size, freeform swimming pool with waterfall feature, with entry steps to the shallow end, and is set within a tiled sun terrace, with sea views. Pools depths are 3.6ft - 4.9ft.

Sports & Recreation
The nearest golf course is Royal Westmoreland about 15 minutes drive away, which has some tee times open to outsiders in the mid morning, otherwise there are the three courses at Sandy Lane about 20 minutes away. The nearest tennis court is located at Sugar Hill about 12 minutes drive away. Moon Reach has its own air-conditioned gym/games room located in the grounds, and features a treadmill, rowing machine, multi-purpose weight machine, and a pool table, plus bathroom.

Locality
Moon Reach is located off the main West Coast road (Highway 1) just between Holetown and Speightstown, not far from Fairmont’s Royal Pavilion and Glitter Bay Hotels. There are one or two local shops and rum shops in the area, but the nearest shopping district is Holetown (about 10 minutes south by car). Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening.

Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with police station, post office, parish church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.

There are a host of restaurants ranging from posh to pizzas within 15 minutes’ drive in either direction of Weston, from the celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 5 minutes away, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take about 15 minutes, both heading south. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s.

A simple supper in one of the fishing villages to the north of St Peter or in St Lucy at Shermans or Half Moon Fort on a Friday or Saturday is an option, for this is when freshly caught fish is cooked by the roadside – this is becoming a popular alternative to the busier Oistins Fish Fry. Here you will find the small wooden fish stalls interspersed with make-shift bars right on the beach at the side of the road, or the occasional rustic dining area perched above the sea. Local fishing boats are still built in this area and can be seen along the road side.

Getting Around
Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown can easily be reached by public transport, a hired car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle(s) to be delivered to the property approximately 3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or, if preferred, the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
