Description
Milord is a long time favourite holiday home set on a picture-perfect Barbados beach. Until 2006 it was a charming beachfront cottage. Now it has been completely transformed into a sophisticated, yet equally charming two-storey house. It has a nice location, close to the West Coast action, but also surrounded by an eclectic mix of holiday homes, chattel houses and various residences strung along both sides of the main West Coast road in Fitts Village. The strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and Highway 1 tends to be pretty narrow around this area, so homes are built very close to the road in order to make the most of the beachfront. Milord has a small enclosed parking area directly off the main road which is a bonus. Although there are other villas in this area, the surroundings of Fitts Village will give you a good feel for real life in Barbados, with all the sights and sounds of daily life, rather than simply the ‘holiday scene’.

Milord’s contemporary Spanish-style architecture is complemented inside by an elegant décor. It is based around a colonial look but has some distinctly modern touches and an especially light and airy ambiance, which is apparent from the moment you step inside the delightful, open-plan living space. A vision of coolness and calm is achieved mostly by keeping to a palette of neutral tones, which is then offset by dark stained wicker and antique reproduction furniture. There are cream marble-effect floor tiles, white tongue and groove ceilings, pretty louver shutters (they not only look good but allow a pleasant through breeze) and tasteful furnishings. The room flows right through to louver doors which open onto the covered terrace and courtyard garden at the front of the house, where they reveal sea views framed by a gate that gives onto the beach.

As you enter Milord you find an impressive kitchen area on the left, flooded with light through glass bricks either side of the cooker, and a guest shower room to the right. The bank of built-in kitchen units is a lovely buttermilk colour and the granite-topped work surfaces are flecked with gold, tan, cream and jet black. Opposite them is a large matching dresser and beyond that are the living and dining areas. The kitchen is well equipped and the set-up is ideal if you are a keen cook (though Milord does come with a cook) who would like to entertain while cooking at the same time. The kitchen and living area have both air-conditioning and ceiling fans. The other end of the living space is split between a small sitting area and a separate formal dining room, which are connected by a central wall partition with two large archways. The sitting area has a wicker sofa and a reading chair with white cotton covers, pale blue scatter cushions and a cable TV in a large cream-coloured cabinet. During the day the light pours into the dining room from two skylights and a pair of arched windows in-filled with glass bricks. The long, mahogany dining table will seat six comfortably on padded chairs with white slip covers. Above it hangs a ceiling light with traditional-style hurricane glass shades, which mirror those used to decorate the table for formal occasions.

There is a second dining and relaxing area outside on the covered veranda, which has lovely sea views. It has a small dining table with umbrella and four chairs. It extends onto a sun terrace, from where steps lead down to a coral stone terrace which feels very much like a courtyard garden. Plants stand in large coral stone urns beneath coconut trees and palms and around them are borders along the edges of low white walls. The courtyard is completely enclosed by white stone walls and in the far side there is an attractive wrought iron gate that leads onto the beach. Flanked by stone gateposts which are topped with white stone plant pots, the gate creates a very photogenic frame for the stunning views beyond, which will have you reaching for your camera.

There are three air-conditioned bedrooms with ceiling fans at Milord, all with en suite bathrooms with granite topped vanities and showers with glass tile walls. Downstairs, off the living area, is the former master bedroom. The two new bedrooms, added in 2006, are located upstairs. Each bedroom has a queen size bed and has been individually decorated to a high standard. The downstairs bedroom has glorious sea views via louvered doors which open onto the terrace - its bed is angled to take best advantage of the view. Instead of a headboard, the bed sits against a low stone counter topped by granite which also serves as a bedside table. Behind is a dressing area with a single vanity and a door leading to the WC and shower.

A mahogany and wrought iron stairway opposite the kitchen leads up to the other two bedrooms. Oddly the first thing you see when you reach the top of the stairs is a curved wall of glass bricks, which turns out to be the back of the shower in the new master bedroom. Both bedrooms are actually the same size, but the master bedroom has a larger bathroom and shower. The bedrooms have pickle pine floorboards with a lovely golden hue, louvered windows and doors, and the most wonderful sea views from a shared balcony which is furnished with wicker chairs, matching sofa and a coffee table. Both the rooms have reproduction, colonial-style antique furniture. The second bedroom has a mahogany headboard and matching side tables, a desk and small table, with soft furnishings and fittings in tan, bronze and taupe. The master bedroom has ebony furnishings with scatter cushions and lamp bases in shades of teal and duck egg blue. A brass bed is framed by a trio of Japanese calligraphy prints, interspersed by quirky candle sconces with an unusual flame design fashioned out of black wire mesh.

Beach & Swimming
There is an excellent stretch of sandy beach to the front of the property which is reached via a gate at the bottom of the garden, with a reef directly in front. The sand stretches both north and south, and has very good swimming and snorkeling either side.

Sports & Recreation
The Sandy Lane golf club, tennis courts, and dedicated spa are located within 10 minutes drive Milord, as are a range of watersports from Sandy Lane Hotel’s beach. There is a fitness studio at West Coast Mall about 12 minutes away.

Locality
Milord is located directly off the main West Coast road, in the Fitts Village area. A five minute drive south will take you to a fish market and the local supermarket, Jordans. Heading north, the first hotel you come to is Crystal Cove, about two minutes away, and Sandy Lane, about eight. At Paynes Bay (around five minutes) you will find a Texaco service station which also sells snacks and groceries. From here a short drive inland up Holders Hill will take you up to the Barbados Polo Club. Back on the main road north you come to the heart of St James and the nearest shopping district, Holetown, where you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening.

Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.

There is a host of restaurants within 15 minutes in either direction of Milord, from the celebrity favourite the Lone Star, about 15 minutes north, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take about three minutes. Also try Calabaza, Scarlet and Daphne’s, all close by. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, some of them providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s.

Useful Hints
Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival. The cook will then prepare a welcome meal. Thereafter, staff will shop for you during your stay if you wish to delegate this chore. A 15% service charge plus VAT will be levied on the value of all shopping bills. Prepayment for your provisional groceries should be made when sending the final balance for the villa. Please see here for Bajan Services
general grocery pack list with approximate prices.

Miscellaneous items such as airport transfers, extra beds and baby equipment are also payable in advance (see here for a price list). In the event that Bajan Services can only provide an estimated cost for customized shopping lists, or where the final payment for your villa has been made prior to other requests, you will be required to complete a credit card authorization form.

Please note that rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’ about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers take approximately 40 minutes and should be paid for in advance with the final payment for your villa. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by
St James Travel & Tours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown can easily be reached by public transport, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or, if preferred, the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
