Malliouhana is the most refined and elegant hotel on Anguilla. Set above Meads Bay - without doubt one of the finest beaches in the region - its 55 luxurious rooms and suites look north and west from a rocky promontory over the island’s surreal blue sea. Where so many hotels in Anguilla have striking, ultra modern architecture, Malliouhana’s inspiration is more classic, coming from Cap d’Antibes, and it stands tall with slender columns and arches in white render, topped with angled terra cotta roofs. And the hotel has something of the sophistication of the South of France too. It is the favoured winter haunt of a well-heeled clientele in a mix of nationalities, who gather by day on the spectacular sand, at the beach bistro (where there is a children’s area – Malliouhana caters well for families) and in the full service spa. In the evenings they gravitate towards the genteel setting of the cliff-top dining room with its exceptional French cuisine. A Leading Small Hotel of the World, Malliouhana Hotel and Spa is extremely comfortable and offers a trusty escape for a smart and cosmopolitan crowd.

REVIEW Malliouhana Hotel is the Anguillian original. In the early 1980s it appeared at the head of Meads Bay in the then completely undeveloped island, offering a level of luxury and cuisine that had barely been seen anywhere around the islands at the time. The bathrooms were as large as most Caribbean hotel rooms. And the bedrooms themselves were palatial. While design has moved on (particularly in Anguilla), Malliouhana’s classic appearance and refined air still speak of elegance and exceptional cuisine on the beach.
Most people arrive at Malliouhana by road, via the slightly ragged scrub and typically West Indian surroundings of Long Bay. You will descend into Meads Bay and immediately turn to the right, past a guard post, into the hotel grounds. The scene changes at once. The dry scrubland turns to lawns dotted with palms and cultivated Caribbean trees and the mid-grey of the kerb-stones complements the tropical greens perfectly.
The main building of the hotel draws up on your left and you get out under a tall porte cochere, entering the open-air foyer, where the reception and concierge desk appear at an open window to your left. Beyond, in the small open-air courtyard with its rectangular sunken pond, the decorative theme of the hotel establishes itself in a mix of Mediterranean and Caribbean. The walls and many pillars around you are painted white and they are topped and tailed with rolled Tuscan terracotta tiles on the roofs and Mexican terracotta tiles underfoot. Against the white walls there are splashes of colour in the plants in urns and in the bright ‘naïve’ Haitian paintings.
A covered walkway leads across the courtyard into the front half of the main building and the main bar. As you enter, you pass the boutique, where you can find small items needed for a holiday – beachwear and shades – as well as some casual clothes and jewellery. With upholstered bench seats against the walls on two sides, the Sunset Bar is partly enclosed by pillars and plants in urns, and it has classic Caribbean touches in the louvered shutters that swing out on angled pegs, allowing the breeze to penetrate but reducing the sunlight. It is large and on two sides there are full length doors giving out onto the pool deck. Outside you will find more tables under parasols, from where - as you would expect from the name - the view carries over the cliffs and out to the sea horizon to the west.
To the left is the walkway down to the restaurant, which sits on the point under a classic Caribbean shingle roof supported on pillars. From here there are views over the beach and sea for 120 degrees. The cuisine is excellent of course. Overseen by Michel Rostang, the Parisian restaurateur, it is classic French with some concessions to the warm climate and to the Caribbean in its ingredients.
From the dining room you can also see the Malliouhana spa building, which stands at the head of Meads Bay down below. It is strikingly built, with plenty of glass, double height white walls and more Haitian paintings. There are five treatment rooms and three suites designed for couples to spend the day for multiple treatments. There is also a fitness centre, a boutique and men’s and women’s sauna and steam rooms. Beyond the spa, passing the two three-bedroom villas on the sand, you come to Malliouhana’s beach area.
Meads Bay, on which is sits, is a truly magnificent stretch of sand, with water so clear and light that you can see the fish fry swimming just behind the faces of the rising waves. The sand is ankle deep and exceptionally soft. Parasols are laid out along it and behind them is a beach area. Here you will find Malliouhana’s beach restaurant, Le Bistro, which offers breakfast and lighter lunchtime fare. There is a swimming pool just in front of it and next door a supervised children’s area with a pirate ship, a waterslide and a toddlers’ pool. There is also a covered area with table tennis and a television with video games. The hotel’s watersports are also based here and equipment includes kayaks, windsurfers, small sailing boats and catamarans, waterskiing and snorkelling gear.
Most of the bedrooms at Malliouhana are set on the cliffs (with the exception of the two three-bedroom villas which sit on the sand). Many are in the main building itself, largely in two storeys above the bar and along the front. The building faces west and all rooms have a large private balcony, from where there is a superb view over the sea and of course the sunset. Inside, the furnishings are mainly Far Eastern hardwood and rattan, and latterly wood made to look like rattan, which stand dark and stark against a light background. Again, the rooms are splashed with colour in the fabrics and in the original Haitian paintings. Other rooms are in cottages scattered around the around the 25 acres of gardens, some set back, others right on the cliff edge. The most spectacular, the main Bougainvillea suite, is built on two stories with a massive glass-fronted view to the sunset.
The layout of Malliouhana, set partially in gardens on the bluff and partially on the beach, is quite open and so there are several centres of gravity, around the pool and bar, at the spa, on the beach and around the tennis courts (there are four courts across the road from the spa). And then in the evenings of course guests make their way to the dining room, with its alcoves on the cliffside. You sit among greenery at tables with white tablecloths and candles in hurricane jars. It is exquisite. As you sit on the cliff looking down to the beach, watching the sunset on the sea horizon, it is impossible not to be stunned by the beauty of the place. If Malliouhana was the original luxury hotel in Anguilla, it has stood the test of time and it is still the most refined and elegant hotel in Anguilla. |

Beach & Swimming Meads Bay is without a doubt one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. It is nearly a mile of magnificent, blinding white sand set in a translucent turquoise sea. It is lovely to stroll along it, though the sand is so deep and soft in places that walking can actually be aerobic exercise. Loungers and parasols are laid out on the sand at the hotel, in front of the beach bar. Here you will find the watersports and their beach restaurant Le Bistro, which is open for lunch, and the bar which opens all day. This is also the location of the children’s area with its pirate playground and waterslide into a children’s pool. There is also an adult pool here.
There is another small secluded strip of sand called Bobbing Cove below the cliffs and the suites, which guests sometimes use.
The main swimming pool at Malliouhana, set on the clifftops next to the main bar, is surrounded by a deck with parasols and loungers. In fact there are two pools there, one of them suitable for diving, and then there is a Jacuzzi as well. |

Sports & Recreation While the atmosphere at Malliouhana is generally pretty serene, there is plenty to keep you active if you wish, much of it down on the beach. Here you will find snorkelling gear – there is good snorkelling right beneath the restaurant, though they also take out daily trips – and there are windsurfers and small sailboats and catamarans including Sunfish, Lasers and Prindle and Hobie Catamarans. Malliouhana has two motorboats, in which they offer water-skiing and day cruises to the offshore islands. Scuba diving and deep sea fishing can be arranged at additional charge.
There are four tennis courts at Malliouhana, set across the road from the resort and the spa. The spa contains a fully equipped fitness room.
There is a good golf course on Anguilla, just a few minutes away at Temenos Estates. Designed by Greg Norman, it is 7200 yards long and has 18 holes. |
| ^ back to top |
The Spa Malliouhana has an extremely luxurious spa set in a dedicated 15,000 sq ft building at the foot of the bluff. In a development of the original architecture of the hotel, it has the slender white columns, but they are fronted with a striking glass façade. There are eight treatment rooms in all. Three (Serenity, Vitality and Tranquillity) are double suites in which a full or half day of treatments can take place. In the spa building you will also find a relaxation lounge (indoor and outdoor) and a Jacuzzi. There are separate male and female changing rooms, steam rooms and saunas.
Treatments include a range of massages including sports and deep tissue massage, Balinese and Thai massages, hot stone therapy, aromatherapy and reflexology and Ayurvedic massages. There are also many body and beauty treatments including body polishes, masques and wraps, as well as facials and hair and nail care. Products used include Sothys and Bath Bloomers out of New York.
The spa is happy to accept outside guests (for a minimum of two treatments).
There is a small boutique with beachwear and jewellery. There is also a fitness room with Cybex and Life Fitness equipment, including treadmills and bicycles. Fitness trainers can be arranged. |

Staff The staff are one of Malliouhana’s most notable features. Quite a few of the original staff remain since the hotel opened in 1984. You can expect to come across Jasmin Quinlan, the front desk manager and Albert Lake, the sommelier. Oneil Webster is in charge of beach service.
The dining room has been overseen by French Maitre D’ Jacques Borderon, who has been at the hotel since nearly the beginning. The Head Chef is Alain Laurent, from Brittany. The menu is produced in consultation with Michel Rostang from Paris, whose restaurant has two Michelin stars.
Malliouhana is owned by the Roydon family, who originate from Bristol in Britain. The hotel was built by father Leon Roydon, who shares the day to day management with his son Nigel. The Resort Manager is Bart van Deventer, a Dutchman who has lived on Anguilla since 1999. |

The Rooms There are 55 rooms and suites in all at Malliouhana, of which around 20 are set in the main building on the cliff-top, with views looking west to the sunset and along the beach. They are extremely comfortable and are elegantly presented, with furnishings made mainly oriental hardwood and rattan, which stand stark against a light background and the rooms. They are brightened by colourful fabrics and - like the central areas of the hotel - they are decorated with excellent ‘primitive’ Haitian paintings. The rooms all have a private balcony or patio.
‘Bathrooms big enough to live in’ were an unknown novelty in the Caribbean in the early 1980s when Malliouhana was built. All of the bathrooms are clad in Italian Andrea Gold marble and mirrors, and many have double basins. They have a shower as well as a handsomely sized bath-tub.
Another handful of rooms are set in The Terrace, a range of rooms standing shoulder to shoulder in the gardens with a view to the north-west. There are also seven villas, each with three rooms, around the 25 acres of gardens. And lastly there are the three huge Bougainvillea Suites, which are exceptional. The largest has a double-storied glass tower with a pool (the other two have Jacuzzis). It is entered via a door of wooden screens from a Thai temple.
Finally there are two three-bedroom villas down on the beach. Set right on the sand, they each have two double bedrooms and a one-bedroom suite, making them ideal for families. Other rooms are adjoining as well. |

Dining The cuisine is one of the key elements of a stay at Malliouhana. The setting is exquisite. You sit under a huge shingle roof, in an open-air, multi-level dining room set on the clifftop, with alcoves and nooks created by greenery. The tables are ranged looking out to sea.
The cuisine is nearly straight French, though there are some concessions to the warmer Caribbean climate and health-consciousness. The menu, which is presented in classic French style, by page - Les Poissons, Les Viandes, Les Foies Gras (or the current special) - is overseen by Michel Rostang, owner of the (two Michelin Star) Rostang restaurant in Paris. He visits three times a year. The head chef is Alain Laurent, who has been at Malliouhana since the mid 1980s and the dining room is overseen by French Maitre D’ Jacques Borderon, who has been at the hotel since nearly the beginning.
Malliouhana’s wine cellar, which has won the Grand Order from the Wine Spectator, runs to 25,000 bottles in 1400 different types and vintages. It is a serious success story for the Caribbean. Jokers claim that the wine cellar, cut into the coral rock on which the hotel is built, must be the only one in the world to be affected by wave action.
The main dining room is open for all three meals. A children’s menu is served from 6pm to 7pm. Down on the beach is Le Bistro, which operates at lunchtime, serving much simpler, lighter fare such as salads and pastas.
Room service is available if you want it. |
| ^ back to top |
Children Perhaps surprisingly, because of its reputation of general sophistication, children are welcome at Malliouhana and are specially catered for.
Down on the beach, next to Le Bistro, there is an extensive play area, where there is a pirate-ship with a 60ft water slide, water cannons, a shallow pool and a sand pit. It is divided into sections suitable for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds. Another area contains a Playstation, suitable videos and a table tennis table. The children’s areas are supervised each day between 9am and 5.30pm. In return for the children’s activities and facilities down on the beach, the hotel asks that children not to use the pools next to the bar until the mid afternoon.
The hotel has a number of adjoining rooms which are good for families, as are the beachfront villas (which are close to the Bistro are and the Children’s playground).
A special children’s menu is served in the main dining room at 6-7pm. |

Weddings Malliouhana is very happy to arrange wedding for you and of course they have the ideal location for it, in their gardens and on the superb sand of Meads Bay. They offer a full service, with spa and beauty treatments beforehand and for the day itself a specially prepared arbour for the ceremony and possibly a marquee with flowers, musical entertainment, photographer and videographer. And of course they can offer an extremely fine celebratory meal through their restaurant. The hotel’s wedding co-ordinator Jasmin Quinlan will liaise with you to arrange exactly the wedding you would like and make sure that everything runs to plan on the day.
A basic wedding package, Simply Wedding, is available for US$1,780 for stays of three nights or more, and includes a welcome greeting at the airport/ferry and round-trip transfers to the hotel, a Malliouhana floral wedding arch on Turtle Cove beach or in the hotel gardens overlooking the ocean, bridal bouquet and boutonniere, a photographer (36 exposures and album), a bottle of French Champagne, return transportation to the registrar’s office, the services of a minister/justice of the peace, marriage stamps and certificate, and a three-course wedding dinner for two from the hotel’s à la carte menu. |

Conferences Malliouhana is happy to host meetings and small conferences and it has a dedicated room above Le Bistro down at the beach area. The room can be divided into smaller meeting areas and it has a cracking view from the balcony for moments between business.
They can cater for groups of 70 in theatre style, 48 in classroom style and up to 36 around a table. There is audio-visual equipment for any presentations. |

Locality Malliouhana Hotel & Spa is located on the northern shore of Anguilla, overlooking the mile-long strip of Meads Bay from its eastern end. The beach is still not fully developed (though it is gradually filling up) and among the occasional accommodation you will find a couple of restaurants including the excellent Blanchards. Beyond here you are in the ‘West End’, where you will find several other big hotels around the coastline and restaurants and shopping malls stretched along the central main road. There is not much to do inland in Anguilla, but Temenos Golf Course is off the main road to the east.
There is however plenty to occupy you on the water and the shoreline – there are of course plenty of other excellent beaches if you decide on a change from Meads Bay. The busiest beach on Anguilla is Shoal Bay EAST towards the other end of the island, where you will find a couple of classic beach bars and some simple restaurants as well as watersports outlets. It is particularly lively on Sundays and holidays. Although Sandy Ground has less of a beach scene, it can also be busy at lunchtime, when there is a good mix of locals and visitors. Sandy Ground can be very lively in the evenings.
Other restaurants to consider nearby include Straw Hat at the other end of the beach and Mango’s in Barnes Bay. Simpler places to eat nearby include Picante, Emeralds and the very local B & D’s Barbecue, a roadside barbecue with a strong local Anguillian feel. |
| ^ back to top |
Meet & Greet Guests arriving on Anguilla, either at the airport outside the Valley or off the ferry at Blowing Point, are greeted by a representative of Malliouhana Resort and put into a taxi to be taken to the hotel. The ride, which is paid for locally, costs US$18 from Blowing Point and US$26 from the airport.
If you are flying into St Maarten then it is worth considering making the transfer to Anguilla by boat, which is often just as quick and generally more pleasant than hanging around Princess Juliana Airport. Malliouhana can organise a sea shuttle from the airport to Blowing Point, price around US$75 one way. The regular inter-island ferries leave from Marigot on the French side and put in at Blowing Point. |
| ^ back to top |
Getting Around If you would like to explore Anguilla, to visit other beaches and beach bars by day and then the restaurants in the evenings, then you may want to hire a car, which is easily arranged. We recommend you book in advance via your travel organiser or direct with Avis/Apex Car Rental, who will deliver to the property and issue your Anguillian driving licence, price US$20. Vehicles can be left at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
Be aware that around Christmas there can be a shortage of cars in Anguilla, so you are advised to book well in advance. Also book early if you want one for a week or more because the pre-booked rates can be better. Taxis are readily available through the reception at the hotel, through drivers who remain on property. |
