Le Sereno is an extremely chic hotel set on the shore of Grand Cul de Sac in the east of St Barts. Recently restyled by Christian Liaigre, it is serene and has a harmonious contemporary style - based in a palette of muted colours, a rich mid-brown and the natural shades of tropical hardwoods, on which turquoise dances with the vibrancy of the lagoon offshore. The resort’s low-key activities radiate around the pool, whose deck extends on one side into the open-sided dining area and bar and on the other down to the beach, where calm water laps between a tangled screen of palms. Either side, looking out to sea from the gardens and a low cliff, stand the suites and two villas. They are perfectly composed, with polished wood floors, white walls and muted fittings, and just a few flashes of bright colour in the occasional tropical flower. With its air of informal and understated sophistication, Le Sereno is an enclave of contemporary tropical tranquillity on a very fashionable island.

It is worth noting that under it new ownership, Le Sereno has undergone a complete restyling and refurbishment by Christian Liaigre, Arnold Chan (the lighting designer) and Fernando Tabora (landscape architect). The hotel has always been well known in St Barths, but it has a very different feel now that it has been redeveloped.
Christian Liaigre himself has been associated with St Barths for many years and has a shop on the island.
In early 2009, Le Sereno opened three new four-bedroom villas also designed by Christian Liaigre. |
