Glitter Bay Estate is a luxury beachfront Barbados resort set in 2 acres of gardens on the famous West Coast of Barbados. A curve of white stucco buildings in Spanish colonial style looks out over spacious gardens of lawns and palms and down to a lovely strip of golden sand. There is a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments on the gated estate, each finished to a high standard (they have full kitchens, air-conditioning and cable TV), and each individually furnished and decorated. It is not a busy and active resort, but it has a nice sense of community and some good central facilities, particularly for children, including a central pool with a separate wading pool, a snack bar and tennis courts. Glitter Bay reaches back to the most romantic days of the Caribbean, when Sir Edward Cunard entertained the likes of Noel Coward here. Now it is a trusty, very comfortable hideaway close to all the activity of the Barbados West Coast.
Glitter Bay Estate has 45 private apartments in total. Ten are available for rent through management company Barbados Villa Services.
Update, February 2009 - There was a 6 month closure last summer in which plenty of work was undertaken. Lifts were replaced, new roofs put on and a new water system installed. The beach bar was refurbished as were the nearby washrooms. The gym that was introduced last year has now been moved to the air-conditioned basement of the beachside accommodation block and has cable TV. A mobile tennis table is located in the atrium area near the pool. On the beach itself and around the pool there is new equipment, dressed in a smart new ‘British racing green’ – there are new beach towels, cushions for the beach chairs and umbrellas. At the newly refurbished beach bar there is now cable TV and lastly a new swimming platform is to be anchored off the beach, within Glitter Bay’s roped off swimming area.

Beach & Swimming There is a lovely, deep stretch of sandy beach directly in front of Glitter Bay, where sun loungers and umbrellas are provided for resident guests. The swimming is excellent. There is a swim-up raft in a roped off area and the snorkelling along this stretch of beach is good. The beach is not easily accessible to non-residents and so usually the only other people to use it are guests from the hotel next door and from nearby holiday villas.
There is a large free-form swimming pool with a waterfall and an adjoining children’s wading pool. The pool is skirted by paved areas for sun bathing and beach/pool towels, beach chairs/loungers, umbrellas and tables. |
| ^ back to top |
Sports & Recreation There are two floodlit tennis courts which guests can use free of charge during the day. A tennis pro (great with children) is available for private lessons. Racquets and balls are available for rent. A mobile tennis table is located in the atrium area near the pool and there is an air-conditioned gym located in the basement of the beachside accommodation block and has cable TV. A range of watersports (water skiing, jet skiing, sunfish sailing, banana and other rides) can be arranged from the beach. The nearest golf course is Royal Westmoreland, which is about five minutes drive away. It has some tee times open to outsiders in the mid morning. Otherwise there are two courses open to the public at Sandy Lane about ten minutes away. |

Dining A beachside bar and buffet area (from the former hotel) offers a daily snack service during the winter season (opens subject to occupancy during summer) from 11.30am to 3pm and the bar itself opens from 11am to 7pm. There is a pleasant covered dining terrace which overlooks the beach. All of the condominiums have fully equipped kitchens and a cook can be arranged for an extra cost. There are many restaurants within easy reach of Glitter Bay. The closest are the located in Royal Pavilion hotel next door. |

Accommodation The 45 condominiums at Glitter Bay Estate are set in two blocks of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The bedrooms are numbered according to location, with 100s referring to the ground floor, 200s for 1st floor, 300 for 2nd floor and 400 for 3rd floor - #101 is at garden level right by the beach and #414 is the furthest inland on the top floor. Most of the apartments are set on a single storey, but all but one of the 3-bedroom units are on two levels with one bedroom and the living areas on the 2nd floor (3rd storey) and two bedrooms on the 3rd floor (4th storey) - #106 is the only three-bedrooom unit on the ground floor and has direct access to the main gardens and pool. The buildings were designed so that some units jut out and others are set back, staggering the terraces or balconies. It gives more privacy and varying views. A unit sat further back into the grounds might actually have a better view of the sea than one closer to the beach.
The ten apartments currently available through Barbados Villa Services are all individually furnished to a good standard. Some have retained the original terracotta floor tiles. Others have been refurbished with a lighter look, with coral stone floor tiles. All have comfortable open-plan living areas with air-conditioning (also with a ceiling fan) and fully equipped kitchens with Decoran or granite work surfaces (some are galley kitchens with a breakfast bar, others have been remodelled to have an extended cooking area with a corner breakfast bar). There is a pleasant sitting area with cable TV and DVD that leads out to a south facing balcony or terrace.
The bedrooms are all air-conditioned (and also have ceiling fans) and they have their own bathroom featuring granite/marble/travertine tiles and vanity (some bathrooms are en suite, others open off the hallway next to the bedroom). Some have a separate tub and shower, some a shower only and some a combination tub/shower. The terraces or balconies all have a dining area with either built-in seating or a furnished sitting area, and some also have a wet bar with mini bar and wine cooler. In the one-bedroom apartments, the bedroom is to the rear (north facing), the bathroom in the hallway and living/kitchen at the front leading out to the balcony/terrace. The two-bedroom apartments have a 2nd bedroom (the master) adjacent to the living area at the front with an en suite bathroom. Glass sliding doors lead onto the balcony/terrace, which faces south out to the gardens/sea. Amenities in the rooms include cable TV and DVD, hair dryers, personal safe, iron and ironing board. Some units also feature a combi washer-dryer.
A handful of the units available through Barbados Villa Services (BVS) have a unique feature due to their location or layout, and are described below:
Glitter Bay 305 – This second floor unit is one of two, one-bedroom apartments within the BVS portfolio. It is furnished in a relaxed style with a mix of pickle pine or off-white wood and rattan/natural fibre furnishings set off by blue and navy fabrics. Use of large coral stone effect floor tiles throughout and a couple of strategic mirrors create a sense of spaciousness. An open-plan living area with air-conditioning (plus ceiling fan) has a well equipped kitchen (dishwasher, large American style fridge, microwave, electric cooker) with breakfast bar. The sitting area has rattan seating (three seater sofa and chair), a large glass-topped coffee table, cable TV and DVD player. Sliding French doors lead out to a good size balcony which has an area for dining with overhead ceiling fan and built-in seating to one side. The teak dining table set has cushioned chairs and can comfortably seat four for dinner. The view takes in the gardens, swimming pool and main facilities, with the elevation allowing glimpses of the sea. The bathroom is located off the hallway and has marble topped vanity and tub with shower. To the rear is a spacious bedroom with king-size bed with padded headboard, a small tub chair and pickle pine dresser, again with soft furnishings in navy and blues. As with all rear bedrooms, a set of tall French windows open out to landscaped parking bays.
Glitter Bay 101 - Of all the units within Glitter Bay Estate, this is the closest apartment you will get to their glorious beach. This is a two-bedroom, ground floor apartment which benefits from being right on the corner and directly opposite the beach (partially screened by planting). It has two good size patios with low walls with built-in planters filled with greenery. Each patio is accessed from the living area by double glass sliding doors. The west facing patio has built-in corner seating and a dining area with the table and chairs higher than normal, so you catch views of the sea. A gate to the rear gives out to the gardens and a pathway winds around to the beach. The other patio faces the beach bar and has sea views to the side. This does not have access onto the gardens and is a little more private, with built-in seating along one side and a small table with two chairs.
An open-plan living area has a well equipped kitchen (as before) with black granite worktops and breakfast bar, and has its own door out to the west facing patio. There is a distinct masculine feel about the style brought in by the black/dark wood furnishings, a couple of comfy brown and tan upholstered chairs and a cream three-seater sofa to co-ordinate with the original terracotta floor tiles, which are throughout. Of the two bedrooms, there is a twin bedded (full size beds) room to the rear of the apartment which has a flat screen cable TV and DVD player, and a bathroom (tub/shower) off the hallway. The Master bedroom is next to the living area, so shares the patio (accessed by glass sliding doors), and carries on the masculine theme with a king-size, raised dark wood bedstead with surrounding ledge. There are matching bedside cabinets and a huge TV cabinet which houses a flat screen TV with cable services. The apartment is fully air-conditioned and has ceiling fans (excludes bathrooms). A combi washer-dryer is located in a cupboard off the hallway and there is a CD player.
Glitter Bay 409 – This extremely well presented 2- bedroom penthouse occupies the 3rd floor and benefits from having no neighbouring apartments either side and very good sea views. It has a spacious and well furnished balcony, which unlike many of the units has had the built-in planters removed. This makes a difference to the dining space which seats 6, and the built-in seating on the opposite end. An electric barbecue is available for use. There are also a couple of wicker tub chairs by a granite topped wet bar with fridge, which it tucked into the corner. Though set back into the gardens the apartment’s elevated position ensures sea views. The apartment has coral stone effect tiles throughout and has been furnished from the UK with both upholstered and wicker seating (includes a sofa bed), all in neutral tones set off with a couple of black lampshades - a contemporary colonial theme.
An open-plan living area has sliding French doors to the balcony, a large pickle pine, lattice fronted corner TV cabinet (32” LCD cable TV, DVD and CD player, Bose docking station) and a spacious, well equipped kitchen (as before) to the rear. The kitchen units are also lattice fronted pickle pine, with black granite work tops. The guest bedroom to the rear has three twin beds, two pushed together with cream headboards to make a king and a third tucked in the corner. This is ideal for children and has a 19" LCD cable TV with DVD player. The bathroom is located off the hallway and has a shower only. The Master bedroom is adjacent to the living area and has French sliding doors leading onto the balcony. It has a king-size bed with dark stained bamboo headboard and matching side cabinets, and a pickle pine dresser (19” LCD cable TV), to the rear is an en suite bathroom which has a double marble topped vanity and a separate tub and shower. A combi washer-dryer is located in a cupboard off the hallway and the living room has ADSL internet connection.
Glitter Bay 106 – This is the estate’s sole three-bedroom ground floor apartment and was created by knocking through into the neighbouring one-bedroom unit #105 and changing the layout. The apartment is particularly spacious and is well suited to families with children. It has a lengthy covered patio which runs across the front of the Master bedroom and living areas. Like the other ground floor units at Glitter Bay Estate, the patio is enclosed by a low wall which is surrounded by planting. However it has the added bonus of a gate which leads to a pathway through the shrubbery and out to the main gardens and pool. Off the Master bedroom the patio is more private, having an archway leading to the main patio.
The apartment’s new layout now has its entrance leading into a long hallway with the living areas to the left and two of the bedrooms to the right. These two bedrooms have their own corridor and to the rear is a twin room (beds can convert to a king) which has its bathroom in the corridor. This has a tub/shower. To the front is the Master bedroom which has a king-size bed, en suite bathroom with shower only, and glass sliding doors to the covered patio. Both of these bedrooms have a TV and DVD player. Back off the main hallway turning left is the kitchen and a double living area. This open-plan living space is an upturned L-shape and starts with the kitchen which is large and very well equipped kitchen (as before). There is plenty of cupboard space which is all built-in and painted white, stainless steel appliances and on three sides flecked granite work tops and a breakfast bar, with 4 bar stools. This is open to the entertainment area with large corner TV cabinet (cable TV, DVD and CD player) and some cushioned rattan chairs, and to the side is a second, more comfortable sitting area. This has a good number of chunky looking, cushioned seagrass sofas and chairs. Both areas have glass sliding doors to the main covered patio which has a dining table and chairs for 6 and a pleasant sitting area with built-in seating, a couple of coffee tables, plus some cushioned wicker chairs. With the sliding doors pushed back so the entire living area is open to the patio, Glitter Bay 106 provides a pleasant and airy living space.
The interior of the apartment has a strong, functional and slightly masculine feel. This is mostly due to the choice of dark stained furniture which include seagrass, wicker, hardwoods and rattan, plus use of fabrics in shades of dark green, turquoise and ochre. However, additional use of cream and white fabric, along with the large pale floor tiles throughout provides a lighter touch. The third bedroom is located behind the kitchen and has two twins which convert into a king. The bathroom is located just off the inner side of living area and hallway and has shower only. A combi washer-dryer is located in a cupboard off the hallway and the living room has ADSL internet connection. There is also a selection of children’s board games, toys and books. |

Locality Glitter Bay Estate is situated in the neighbourhood of Porters, St James, which was a large sugar estate in the mid 17th century. Porters Mansion, the old estate’s listed Great House, and the ruins of the Porters Sugar Factory are just a few minutes down the road. Next door to the north is the Fairmont Royal Pavilion hotel and to the south you will find a string of multi-million dollar homes. About five minutes drive south, past one or two local shops and rum shops, is Holetown, the main shopping area nearby. There are two shopping centres, the smaller Cave Shepherd Plaza which is closer to Sandy Lane (heading south), and then the larger West Coast Mall in Holetown itself. You will also find a large supermarket, a bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques, as well as a large gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) with a mini mart and fast food outlet. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. At the centre of Holetown, which was where the English first landed in 1625 and came back in 1627 to settle, are most things you would expect to find in a small community - Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.
There is a host of restaurants within a 10 minute drive in either direction on the main West Coast road (Highway 1). These range from the famous Cliff Restaurant which will take about 10 minutes to reach, to pizza parlours, cafés, beach bars and fast food outlets. There is an excellent patisserie, Flindt, in Holetown. Nightlife is also a 5 minute drive away, with weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street in Holetown where restaurants and bars provide live music. |

Villa Management Barbados Villa Services, a small villa rental and management company, was started in 2001 by Marilil Troulan. Marilil is Barbadian born and bred who has over 21 years experience in the travel and tourism industry of Barbados. She started work at the former Hilton Hotel, before moving across to the airline industry and working for Pan American and Aeropostal, and then back to the hotel environment at Treasure Beach Hotel. She ended up at Elegant Resorts, one of the UK’s top tour operators. Marilil has touched on all aspects of travel and understands exactly what her clients expect in terms of travel, accommodation and service at the destination.
The company started with one apartment at Glitter Bay, when it was formerly The Fairmont Glitter Bay Resort (The Penthouse Suite 409 which was always privately owned) and one 4 bedroom villa in Sandy Lane. Its portfolio of management properties has now grown to 9 apartments at Glitter Bay and several other homes on the west coast. Ably assisting Marilil in technical matters and property issues is her husband Joe Troulan. Joe hails from England and served seven years in the British Army. In the unlikely event of a ‘technical glitch’ during your stay, he will ensure it is attended to promptly and efficiently. Over the last six years he has also remodeled and renovated over 15 units on the estate, personalizing each one to each owner’s specification.
With this ethos in mind, Barbados Villa Services offers you a very personalized service when you travel to Barbados. You will be met at the airport by a polite and informative driver who will bring you to the estate, where you will be greeted and shown through the apartment. Any questions you have about the apartment, the estate or the island will be answered. Once you are comfortable you will be left to start the holiday at your own pace. A representative is just a phone call away and will assist with any matters that need attention.
The Glitter Bay Estate is privately managed by The Royal Estate Corporation (TREC) headed by Joe Troulan and his brother Lt Col Tony Troulan. |

Getting Around Although you are in a resort style setting and Holetown is relatively close by, a hired car is strongly recommended for all private villa/apartment holidays. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing, and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries, unless you prefer to use taxis. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle(s) to be delivered to the estate approximately 3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the estate at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
