Description With its enviable beachfront location on one of the most popular beaches on the West Coast of Barbados, Belair has long been a popular choice for beach lovers looking for a comfortable villa within steps of a glorious stretch of Caribbean beach. Originally built in the 1930s Belair has been lovingly maintained, and was sympathetically renovated and stylishly refurbished for the new millennium.
Belair is a low lying villa with a separate cottage whose main veranda is just one step above the sand and the water’s edge of Mullins Beach. There are several holiday homes strung along the beach here, and Belair shares a drive with Aquamarine. Accessed off the West Coast main road, its tree-lined drive creates a secluded air of cool and calm, which is much quieter than the busy feel of the St James coast further south. This coastal strip of St Peter has always been the choice of those seeking a retreat from the more fashionable beaches, and remains so. There is not a single hotel in this part of the island, along the beaches of Gibbs and Mullins. Instead you will find villas and smart homes, although one or two of them are large enough to be considered mini hotels in themselves. Although there has been some development within the area over recent years, not much has changed and really the only activity of note takes place around the former Mullins Beach Bar, as it has done for decades.
With its attractive entrance hall with powder room and corner seating) and its glass-topped console with wall mirror for floral displays, the entrance of Belair provides a warm welcome. Leading into the open-plan living area which has two sitting rooms divided by an archway flanked by two coral stone columns in keeping with the rest of the interior. The first is cheerfully furnished with dark blue rattan, set off by colourful abstract oil paintings and is where the 50" cable TV and VCR is located. The second sitting room also has a TV and large upholstered corner sofa, behind which is a built-in bar with fridge.
The focus of living at Belair is the large covered veranda overlooking the beach. This incorporates the dining area that has a white painted wood dining table and chairs (these can be arranged to seat twelve at one long table or split into smaller tables if required). Seating on the veranda takes the form of pink painted Adirondack chairs, strategically placed in front of the traditional low balustrade wall to make the most of the terrific views. The veranda extends to a sundeck which has eight matching pink sunloungers, again with splendid sea views and a very photogenic lattice wooden gate, which leads out directly onto the sand and Mullins Beach. There is an outside shower for rinsing off after a swim.
There are four bedrooms in the main house, the first of which is off the living area. This has twin beds with a green theme and shares a bathroom (marble topped vanity and tiled shower) with a second twin bedroom decorated in sea theme of blue and white. A third corner bedroom is slightly larger, again with twins beds, which have a hand painted sea horse on each wooden headboard. Its en suite bathroom picks up the sea horse theme in its shower tiles. The Master bedroom is a delight, and being on the beach side, it has the most splendid views to wake up to or to enjoy on the day bed or window seating. The room is en suite and has been elegantly furnished and decorated in cool blues and whites, with a canopy king size bed facing the ocean view window which overlooks the sundeck.
The kitchen in the main house is worth a mention not only because of Belair’s cook Delsina, but because it really is quite striking. Pink Decoran work tops and pink detailing to the white built-in cupboards may sound a trifle over the top, but it works, and of course Delsina loves it - her peas & rice, baked chicken and macaroni pie have been very popular over the years, all 26 of them at last count.
A charming two-bedroom cottage, which has been decorated with some quirky touches, sits on the other side of the paved driveway. With exposed white-painted wooden roof, white walls offset by soft coral colour, textured tiles and colourful tropical fabrics, the cottage is small and cosy.
A small sitting/TV area has built-in corner seating against the wall and this serves as a partial partition to one of the bedroom areas. The first bedroom has a king size bed, built-in wardrobes and adjoining bathroom this is shared by the other bedroom). It should be noted that due to the open-plan aspect of the cottage - the bedroom does not have a door and is therefore open to the main living area and kitchenette - there is a certain lack of privacy.
The kitchenette is located opposite the sitting area and has just a fridge and sink, with a wall mounted breakfast table suitable for two people only, supported by carved wooden fish, which match a pair of carved wooden fish framing the wall mirror. Beyond the kitchen, the second double bedroom is reminiscent of a chattel house, with shutters, pickled pine tongue and groove walls to three sides and a couple of tropical prints. The bed is covered with checked pink and has a white lattice head board.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans and all bathrooms have showers only.
Please note that some of the soft furnishings have been updated at Belair and the description above does not reflect the changes. |

Locality Belair, which shares a drive with Aquamarine villa next door, lies just south of Mullins Bay and the popular Mullins Beach Bar (former Mannie's Suga Suga).
Speightstown, the island’s second largest town, is a very short drive away (about 5 minutes). Formerly known as Little Bristol because of connections to Bristol on the West Coast of England, Speightstown still has a feel of old time Barbados about it. There is a small fish market on the sea front, fruit and vegetable sellers known as ‘hucksters’ on the road side, a couple of local restaurants and bars and a smattering of shops, plus a reasonably well stocked supermarket.
The nearest good restaurants to the north are the Terrace at Cobblers Cove hotel, Mango's by the Sea in Speightstown itself, La Mer at Port St Charles and The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour. To the south try the Lone Star. |

Getting Around Although there is a beach bar within walking distance and Speightstown is relatively close (it can be reached by public transport), a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing, but especially when it comes to shopping for groceries - unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required.
Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
