The Auberge de Terre Neuve offers some of the least expensive self-catering accommodation available in St Barths. The ten apartments are plain but perfectly comfortable and each has a fully equipped kitchen on a large balcony overlooking a simple garden in a residential and villa district high above the north coast. They are ideal for independent travellers who love the island but who would prefer not to join in the expensive race for the beachfront. It is important to be happy to drive yourself around, so it helps that the owners also run a car hire company, and offer a very good combined deal on the car and accommodation together.

Style: Simple, modern some recently upgraded with teak
The Beach: Baie des Flamands ½ mile
The Rooms: 10
Key features: The ten one bedroom St Barths rental apartments are self-contained and quite simple but comfortable. TV, DVD, fully equipped kitchens, barbecues, beach towels and chairs provided, good packages with cars
Children: Welcome
Staff: Daily maid service except Sundays

The Auberge deTerre Neuve is a series of self-contained St Barths rental apartments in the district of Terre Neuve high above Baie des Flamands in the North-west of St Barths. Terre Neuve is a fairly local district, populated by St Barthian families but also many villas too. The Auberge is fairly simple, but it enables you to enjoy the island in relatively inexpensive accommodation. It is important to be mobile in St Barths, and particularly here, but the fact that the Auberge is owned by a family that also has a St Barths car rental company means that you can get a combined deal that is one of the least expensive on the island.

You approach the Auberge de Terre Neuve on the main northwest ridge, taking the turn down to Flamands. After a few hundred yards, before you begin the serious descent down to the bay, you will find the Auberge on the left. The apartments are set in a simple, narrow lot, which is surrounded by other local houses and gardens.

The apartments stand in a line, running up a steep hill, and are accessed from a drive at the rear. They look north from their large terraces, some over the garden, others with a view of the sea. The sea view, obscured by a rise in the middle distance, does not carry down to the beach itself, but you can see the ocean, and on a good day the islands of St Martin and Anguilla are visible on the horizon.

There are just ten one-bedroom apartments, set in five salmon pink buildings surrounded by some tropical greenery. Inside they are quite simple, but they have everything you need for a stay – and some guests stay for several weeks. The bedrooms have either a double or twin beds (making it work well for families to take two, though there are no connecting doors). Some have recently been redecorated and have more stylish teak furniture, but they all have a large terrace with a table and chairs and loungers. The kitchen is tucked into the side of the terrace. All the apartments have phones, TVs and a safe and outside they have a barbecue as well.

If you are staying at the Auberge it helps if you are pretty self-contained – many of the people who come to stay here have known the island for many years, love it and keep coming back. There are no common facilities such as a pool or restaurant. Also, there is no reception area, but the owners usually pop in each day and are always available on the phone. There is maid service to the apartment each day except on Sundays. The apartments are also pretty simple, but if all you want is a bolt-hole from which to enjoy the island, to drive off to the beaches and to the restaurants, and don’t want to spend a fortune staying in one of the well known hotels, then Auberge de terre Neuve could be just the place for you.

Beach & Swimming
The closest beach is Baie des Flamands, a superb and relatively unused beach at the bottom of the hill beneath the apartments. There are a couple of hotels where you can buy a drink or retreat for an extravagant lunch (Isle de France and Baie des Anges). While the beach is calm most of the year, be aware that when there is a swell to the north the waves can break with unexpected suddenness and surprising force. The Auberge provides towels and beach chairs that you can take with you.

If you are driving then you can also easily get to St Jean beach, the liveliest on the island, or Grande Anse des Salines, which probably has the nicest sand and bay.

There is no swimming pool at the Auberge.

Sports & Recreation
No sports are available at the Auberge or on Flamands beach itself, but there are plenty of options available through the main operators in Gustavia. For wind and kite surfing you should head down to the east end of the island to Grand Cul de Sac.

If you wish to go horse-riding then St Barths’ stable, the Ranch des Flamands, is close by (down the hill and then right along a very rough road).

Locality
The area around the Auberge is mainly residential, but it is a quick drive down to the beach at Flamands, one of the least used but best on the island. There is a bakery in Colombier, but the closest large supermarket is Match, opposite the airport. There are other supermarkets in Gustavia

The main interest beyond the beach in St Barths is in Gustavia, both for its waterfront and few pretty streets with cafes and bars and for its shopping. There is a museum at the point all the way around the bay. There are restaurants all over the island. The closest are Maya’s on the waterfront in Public, just outside Gustavia, and the ones in St Jean.

Getting Around
One of the advantages of staying at Auberge Terre Neuve is that the owners also run a car hire company and they offer very good deals when you combine the two. A vehicle is really a necessity when you are staying up at the Auberge because it is quite a long way from all the restaurants and beaches on the island. See our review of
Gumbs Car Rental.
