Description Barbados is one of the best islands in the Caribbean for villa beach life and Aquamarine is a tremendously popular beachfront villa that sits just above the water’s edge at Mullins Bay. It is one of several holiday homes strung along the beach in this area, accessed off the West Coast main road through a tree-lined drive that has a secluded air of cool and calm and is much quieter than the busier strips of the St James coast further south. This area of St Peter has traditionally been the choice of those seeking a retreat from the more fashionable beaches, and remains so. There are no hotels in this part of the island, along the beaches of Gibbs and Mullins. Instead there are just villas and smart homes, although one or two of these are large enough to be considered mini hotels in themselves. There has been some development in the area over recent years, but not much has changed and really the only activity of note takes place around the former Mullins Beach Bar, as it has done for decades.
The most special feature of Aquamarine is surely its spacious covered terrace, which allows you to enjoy the beach views, as well as an alfresco lifestyle. The terrace is the perfect spot for enjoying breakfast, lunch and sundowners, and it extends out to an uncovered terrace area for sunbathing. The views from the terrace carry over the beach and sea and sweep to the right, taking in the curved bay along to Mannie’s Suga Suga Beach Bar and Restaurant (formerly Mullins Beach Bar).
The views are the first thing to strike you as you enter the open-plan living and dining area, through the louvered windows and a glass sliding door to the terrace. The living area has a homely feel and is pleasantly furnished with sea grass seating and pale pink cushions in one corner, a TV cabinet and small coffee table with a small statue of a monkey, which matches a mural on the wall. There is also a mini bar with small fridge. The dining table has matching sea grass chairs for six and sits opposite the glass sliding doors to the terrace. Finishing touches include a large pebble & shell wall mirror and an interesting wall mounted copper candelabrum featuring large breadfruit-like leaves.
Out on the terrace an informal dining area with circular wooden table has wicker padded seating for six, and a couple of Adirondack chairs. The sun deck has sunloungers and folding beach chairs. There is also a barbecue grill and outdoor shower. Access to the beach is via steps from the terrace.
In the hallway that leads to the bedrooms a large art deco display cabinet houses an interesting collection of sea shells, and there is also a laundry room. The rear Master bedroom occupies one corner of the bedroom wing and has a cheerful fresh décor of blue and white checked floral fabrics, with hand painted flowers on the wardrobe and chest of drawers and a king size bed with a pickled wooden lattice headboard. It has a standing fan and spacious en suite bathroom with tub/shower and double vanity. Next door a second bedroom (double bed) is decorated in shades of lilac and grey. It shares its bathroom, with glass tiled shower, with the third bedroom (twin), which has crisp blue and red checked fabrics.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned and both bathrooms have wall mounted hair dryers. |

Locality Aquamarine is located close to other holiday homes and shares a drive with Belair villa next door. It lies just south of Mullins Bay and the popular Mullins Beach Bar (formerly Mannie's Suga Suga). Speightstown, the island’s second largest town, is a very short drive (about 5 minutes). Once known as Little Bristol because of connections to Bristol on the West Coast of England, Speightstown still has a feel of old time Barbados about it. There is a small fish market on the seafront, fruit and vegetable sellers known as ‘hucksters’ on the road side, a couple of local restaurants and bars and a smattering of shops, plus a reasonably well stocked supermarket.
The nearest good restaurants to the north are The Terrace at Cobblers Cove hotel, Mango's by the Sea in Speightstown itself, La Mer at Port St Charles and The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour. To the south try the Lone Star. |

Useful Hints Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival. The cook will then prepare a welcome meal. Thereafter, staff will shop for you during your stay if you wish to delegate this chore. A 15% service charge plus VAT will be levied on the value of all shopping bills. Prepayment for your provisional groceries should be made when sending the final balance for the villa. Please see here for Bajan Services general grocery pack list with approximate prices.
Miscellaneous items such as airport transfers, extra beds and baby equipment are also payable in advance (see here for a price list). In the event that Bajan Services can only provide an estimated cost for customized shopping lists, or where the final payment for your villa has been made prior to other requests, you will be required to complete a credit card authorization form.
Please note that rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’ about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa. |

Airport Meet & Greet If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers take approximately 55 minutes and should be paid for in advance with the final payment for your villa. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by St James Travel & Tours.
If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking. |

Getting Around Although a beach bar is within walking distance and Speightstown can be reached by public transport, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
