Description
A Summer Place is a delightful, spacious seven bedroom villa on Discovery Bay on the north coast of Jamaica with a very welcoming atmosphere, large gardens and a great beachfront location. It is set on the waterfront along Fortlands Road on the eastern side of the bay, one of a string of villas that together have a residential, holiday feel about them. The villas are also extremely smart, among the best looking and best equipped beachfront holiday homes in the Caribbean. A Summer Place is the first villa along this stretch of coast. It is particularly suitable for families, with plenty of space for children to run about in the gardens, a playground further up Fortlands Road and the nearby public beach at Puerto Seco, which also has a play area for children.

The house itself uses traditional Caribbean gingerbread style in its design. It has a sky blue exterior and white painted woodwork, French doors, louvered windows and playfully carved fretwork along the wide living veranda. It also has an upper wood balustrade balcony, supported by a series of slim posts. The decoration inside the house is colourful and fun and features a nice selection of original local and Cuban artwork.

A Summer Place is also very comfortable. Through the entrance hallway you come into a large open-plan living area that includes a sitting room and a family room with 30” satellite TV, VCR and video selection, a CD system and a piano. The French doors on the front of the house open the living space out onto the much used covered veranda, which is comfortably furnished for both dining and relaxing. This extends the entire width of the villa and is fringed by gingerbread fretwork through which flowering vines are trained. There is a formal dining room inside with a centuries-old mahogany table that can seat up to fourteen, however this does not get as much use as the outer dining areas.

There are some lovely views from the house out to the bay. Just beyond the living veranda is a large stone-tiled sun and pool terrace, and then the good-sized pool. To one side of the pool is a gazebo with a bar, and on the other the terrace has been extended so that it can be used for al fresco dining. From here the lawn runs level with the terrace down to the sand of the hundred foot beach. The whole area is very open, enabling parents to keep an eye on the children both at the pool and on the beach.

On the north side of the property, an L-shaped jetty leads out to a gazebo on a small island, which offers a great vantage point, and is a wonderful spot for cocktails at sundown. The jetty encloses the villa's private bay and gives good conditions for swimming and snorkelling. On the south side of the garden, the grounds have been extended to create another lawn, which provides ideal space for children to run around in, or have a picnic.

A Summer Place has seven double bedrooms, five upstairs in the main house, one downstairs and one a small room in a garage conversion. They each have an individual décor with a distinctive colour scheme and have ceiling fans as well as air-conditioning. The bedroom downstairs in the main villa, which gives onto the veranda and pool terrace, is very colourful, with lime green walls and citrus pattern fabrics and is ideal for guests with disabilities. It has a TV and VCR and an en suite bathroom with shower/tub and opens directly into all the lower level spaces. The bedroom in the garage is more simply furnished. It has pastel colour scheme and a king size bed with en suite bathroom with tub/shower.

Upstairs three bedrooms have French doors onto the full length, covered, furnished balcony, from where there are wonderful views of the bay and the two other bedrooms have rear views of the gardens and nearby hills. The impressive master bedroom on the corner has a carved mahogany four poster canopy bed and a two-seater sofa and is decorated in blues and yellows. It gives out onto the balcony, has a TV and VCR and a large en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate double shower. Next door is a contemporary-looking king size bedroom decorated in pale yellows and lilac, with en suite tub/shower. This room also gives onto the balcony. The room at the opposite corner has a king size bed (convertible to two twins) and wicker headboards and is decorated in pale green with palm prints. It also has an en suite bathroom with tub/shower, a TV and a VCR. A second rear-facing master bedroom, also on the corner, is done out in pinks and white wicker and has two queen beds (especially suitable for a family of four), TV and VCR, and a spacious bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. The fifth bedroom also faces the rear and has a king size bed with carved mahogany headboard, TV and VCR, and en suite tub/shower.

Beach and Swimming
There is a very nice 100ft strip of bright white sand right at the bottom of the lawn in its large garden. An L-shaped jetty that leads from the north side of the gardens to an offshore gazebo on a small island which provides a protected cove with calm swimming conditions, and an excellent place to sit and to sunbathe. Further out, there are reefs with good snorkelling.

The good sized, freshwater swimming pool (16ft x 32ft), located just beyond the covered veranda, is the focal point of A Summer Place. It has steps in the shallow end and is surrounded by a tiled sun terrace that is flush with the lawn.

Sports & Recreation
A Summer Place has snorkelling gear, sea kayaks and pool floats for guests use.

The nearest golf courses are the SuperClubs Breezes Golf Course, an 18 hole 72 par, 6,814 yard course located in Runaway Bay and the Grand Lido Braco Golf Club, west of Rio Bueno, a 9 hole par 28, 1,357 yard course. Both are around 10-15 minutes by car. About an hour away is Sandals Golf and Country Club, an 18 hole, 72 par, 6311 yard course located in the hills east of Ocho Rios (established in 1951, it was formerly known as the Upton Golf Course). Headed the other way there are also several courses just before Montego Bay.

The nearest stables for riding or polo are both in the Parish of St Ann. Chukka Cove at Laughlands is 25-30 minutes by car and St Ann Polo Club and Equestrian Centre in Drax Hall is approximately 30-40 minutes away.

Locality
A Summer Place is set within an extremely popular and exclusive residential enclave, Fortlands Road, which is often referred to as “Millionaires Row” and has around a dozen luxury Jamaica holiday rental homes. They line the eastern shore line of Discovery Bay about 1 ¾ hours east of Montego Bay and about 25 minutes west of Ocho Rios. The majority of homes along this strip are owned by wealthy Jamaican families. On approach to the villas you will pass Puerto Seco Beach, a pretty white-sand public beach. Local fishermen operate from here and it is a popular spot with the Jamaicans, particularly at the weekends. You can easily kayak along the strip of villas from the top of the bay at Fortlands Point down to Puerto Seco.

The area around Discovery Bay is fairly ‘un-touristy’ and so there are not that many restaurants and bars. While the outlook on Discovery Bay is largely blue water, it has an interesting industrial aspect. The most prominent building in sight is the large metal, dome-shaped storage tank of the Kaiser Bauxite Plant on the western corner of the bay. This is where some of Jamaica’s bauxite is shipped from. Nearby is the small Columbus Park Museum, a commemorative park at the roadside to mark the 1494 landing of Christopher Columbus in Discovery Bay (though this has since come into dispute, in favour of Rio Bueno not far off). There is an open-air collection of artefacts including a water wheel from a sugar estate, an Indian dug-out canoe, cannons and agricultural equipment. The village just across the road from the Fortlands Road entrance consists of a post office, public library, petrol station, police station, small supermarket and patty shop. You will need to go to Ocho Rios if you wish to do serious shopping, dine out or sample the local nightlife.

Useful Hints
Provisioning: The chef at A Summer Place will assume that you would like a welcome meal prepared for your arrival and that initial food and drink supplies are to be purchased. You should ask your travel organiser or the villa agent (if booking direct) for a list of suggested items. If booking direct you may opt to prepay your groceries, which should be done at least 60 days prior to arrival. The chef works to an average budget of US$40 per adult/$20 per child per day, which includes a basic drinks package of rum, wine and beer, but does not cover extras such as lobster or imported steak (these vary according to market prices). The rest of the shopping for your stay will be done by the chef once you have liaised with him on arrival. If you haven't pre-paid, the bill for the initial provisioning (plus the costs for transport) should be paid in cash and you should also provide the chef with funds for all subsequent shopping, including transportation costs - you may opt to go with him on the first shopping trip.

Gratuities: Rental rates for villas in Jamaica do not include ‘tips’ and it is recommended that you set aside 10% of the total villa rental in winter and 15% for summer as a gratuity for the staff. You will be expected to pay this directly to the staff before you leave. Information on how it is to be divided will be included in the guest’s welcome book, and you may find an envelope provided.

The laundress at A Summer place will attend to your personal laundry (excluding dry clean items), which if handed over in the morning is usually ready later that same afternoon.

The villa has a crib and high chair.

Weddings: A Summer Place does not host weddings or large functions.

How To Book
If you wish to book direct, bookings should be made through the villa agent,
Jamaica Villas by Linda Smith. To confirm a reservation you must send a deposit of 25% of the total rental fee (50% for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year). Payment of the remaining 75% is required 60 days prior to your arrival (90 days for Thanksgiving and 120 days for Christmas and New Year) and no refunds will be made during this time. For cancellations made more than 60 days prior to scheduled occupancy, deposits will be refunded less a 10% cancellation fee and relevant credit card processing or wire fees. If you are booking within 60 days of your arrival, full payment must be made to secure the booking. A US$500 security deposit is also required, against damage to the villa or contents during your stay. It is refundable on your return home if no damage has occurred. Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct you will be able to make arrangements for the villa agent to send a driver to meet you at the airport, which will then be pre-paid with your balance for the villa. The airport transfer from Montego Bay will take approximately 1¾ hours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
A hired car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays but a popular alternative in Jamaica is a private driver service, which is easily arranged and particularly useful if you go out in the evenings. For shopping or sightseeing, you may wish to be independent and drive yourself around as it gives you an added element of freedom to explore the island, which is exceptionally beautiful. If you are booking the villa direct or through a tour operator, you can organise car hire at the same time as booking your accommodation.

If you do decide to go for a hire car, ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property (there may be a delivery fee) approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Jamaica or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. All drivers booked through the villa staff or through Jamaica Villas by Linda Smith are registered JUTA tour guides.
