Horizon Yacht Charters (Grenada) is based in Grenada, at the southern tip of Windward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, and is within easy striking distance of the Grenadines, some of the finest sailing grounds in the islands. The company is a small and relatively young yacht charter company that offers a varied selection within a small fleet – they have about fifteen yachts for bareboat hire, of between 38 and 50 ft in length and between two and four cabins. They also have a number of crewed yachts on their books. Horizon’s fleet is purposefully kept quite small in order that they are able to maintain their high levels of service.
Horizon is headed up by James and Jacqui Pascall, both of whom have long experience of the yachting industry in the Caribbean and elsewhere. Jacqui worked initially as crew on luxury yachts and later as a yacht broker, and James has spent stints as crew and as a base manager for a large charter company.
And it was this, working with a large firm, that persuaded them to set up Horizon Yacht Charters in Grenada in 2001. Their rationale is that they can give a better experience to sailors by offering a highly personal service that is tailored to their individual requirements. They make sure to keep in contact with their clients from the moment of first contact till the end of the cruise.
As you arrive in Grenada you will be collected at the airport and taken to the base nearby. If you are on a bareboat cruise you will be settled in and given a personal chart briefing and handover. If you arrive after dark you will be shown around the boat as well as the dockside restaurant, bar and washrooms. Provisioning will have been organised in advance and your supplies will already be on board.
But Horizon is also happy to help in other ways too. They can arrange additional sports equipment for instance, such as a windsurfer and scuba gear. Or a hammock and mobile phone if that’s more your style. And if you would like a skipper to accompany you for a day or two while you settle in then that can be arranged too. The ‘skipper to Carriacou’ is quite a popular option.
In addition to this they are also able to help out with any special requests that you may have. Perhaps you want to have scuba training, in which case they will arrange for instructors to meet you. Or you might want to have a wedding on a remote beach. Finally Horizon is also able to help in the background of the organisation, with flights and accommodation where required.
In addition to bareboats, Horizon Yacht Charters can also book a number of crewed yachts. In the Grenadines area crewed yachts, which can be both monohull and catamarans, tend to start at around fifty foot in length and they come with a captain and cook at least.
Horizon offer some ‘stay-sail’ packages, in which you spend some time ashore as well as time on board – perhaps a week on a yacht followed by a few days in one of the hotels in the South-west of Grenada, or a week in a villa. It is a good option for getting both sides of the Caribbean. Another option is to combine your charter with a stay in a villa on the Grenadine island of Carriacou. Spice Isle Villas have a portfolio of the best rental villas on Grenada, as well as Las Tortugas on Carriacou, work closely with Horizon Yacht Charters to provide Villa / Sail packages. Finally Horizon also permit you to start your cruise, or to drop off the yacht, in locations other than Grenada itself. This may be convenient if you have just a short time or if you do not want to make the full day sail up from Grenada to the island of Carriacou. Pick up and drop off locations include St Vincent, Union Island and Carriacou.
Horizon Yacht Charters (Grenada) is affiliated with Horizon Yacht Charters in the BVI. While the companies are independently owned and managed, they do have a ‘brand’, which includes a similar philosophy and work in parallel in some matters such as marketing. |

Base Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada is based in True Blue Bay, a well protected cove near the south-western corner of the island which is just five minutes drive from the airport and fifteen from St George’s the capital. Horizon’s offices and dock, which has around twenty berths, are located within the grounds of True Blue Bay Resort, a lively small hotel with an excellent waterfront restaurant and bar. The small resort is also a very nice place to stay if you are spending a few days ashore before or after your charter. There is a small boutique and gift shop at the hotel and a pharmacy located within walking distance of the base but if you wish to provision your yacht yourself you will need to take a taxi to the nearest supermarket five minutes drive away. Alternatively Horizon has an extensive provisioning service. On request, your yacht can be stocked before you arrive. See 'Provisioning' below. |

Fleet Horizon Yacht Charter’s fleet runs to fifteen monohull yachts and catamarans that can be hired as bareboats, with a skipper or fully crewed. It is divided into three sections and offers a good range of prices, from brand new luxury yachts to less expensive options that have seen a bit of life. They are all well maintained and come with rigid inflatables and outboards, biminis, barbecue, CD player, GPS, quality linens and towels, full equipment in the galley and safely equipment.
The Grenadines Commodore Fleet offers a range of Bavaria yachts which vary from brand new to four years old. Horizon Yacht Charters is the agent in the Caribbean region for this boatyard and so they have a handful of these yachts on their books, varying between 38 and 46 feet in length and with between two and four cabins. These yachts are managed by the company for private owners who buy the yacht as an investment and for inclusion in the charter pool, as well as to sail it themselves.
The Catamaran Fleet consists of a variety of catamarans between 38 and 47 feet long and with between two and four cabins. They include a 2001 Leopard 4700 and a 2005 Lagoon 440, both with air-conditioning and four double cabins which can accommodate up to ten guests.
The older Club Fleet offers the best value for money with a 2000 Jeanneau 45.2 currently available.
UPDATE - a brand new Jeanneau SO50 (3 cabins, 2 heads and air-conditioning) joined the fleet 01 April 2009. |

Bareboat With a bareboat charter you are your own skipper, so you will need to satisfy Horizon Yacht Charters that you have the necessary experience to take care of their boat and equipment. The sailing conditions in the Grenadines are not usually difficult, but you need to be sure of your level of competence. You will be required to complete a sailing resume when booking your charter.
All charters are checked out and sailors are given full chart and boat briefings to familiarise them and their crew with the vessel and the cruising grounds Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. With notice, Horizon Yacht Charters can provide a “Skipper to Carriacou” to sail with you on the first day to the sister island of Carriacou. During this passage the skipper will cover the chart and yacht briefing while underway. Of course Horizon also provides excellent support from shore in case anything goes wrong during your charter. |
| ^ back to top |
Skippers If you wish, Horizon Yacht Charters can provide a professional skipper to accompany you for a couple of days while you settle in, or for the whole charter if you would like it. Skippers cost from US$130/day, plus food, beverages and optional gratuities (usually 10-15% of the charter fee). This is a good option if you do not want to go it alone and have knowledgeable company onboard with you. It should be noted that although a skipper will happily give you lots of tips, he or she is not an instructor. HYC will happily arrange for a qualified ASA instructor to come out with you on a daily or weekly basis. |
| ^ back to top |
Cooks Cooks are also available and are charged out at around US$110/day, plus food, beverages and optional gratuities as per a skipper. If you would like to have a Skipper and Cook onboard Horizon have couples that can provide a good service and they will arrange an all-inclusive package so you will not have to pay anything further while you are on charter although meals ashore are extra and it is expected that you invite the crew. The menu is selected based on your preference list with fine wines included. Please see more on Provisioning further down the page. |

Stay & Sail The Stay / Sail combination – spending some time ashore as well as time afloat - is always worth considering as part of your sailing holiday. It enables you to catch the fertility and easy atmosphere of a larger Windward island as well as the fantastic sailing in the Grenadines. It might be just a couple of days to settle in before the cruise or to chill afterwards, but equally you might add a week’s beach holiday in one of Grenada’s delightful small hotels. Stay / Sail also works well with a villa because it provides the group a similar privacy to the yacht on which they will be sailing together.
Horizon Yacht Charters offer a number of Stay / Sail packages in combination with a handful of hotels, including Bel Air Plantation and True Blue Bay Resort & Villas (right next to their offices), but they also work closely with Spice Isle Villas, which represents around ten of the finest villas in Grenada as well as one on the Grenadine island of Carriacou (where it is possible to start or finish a cruise with Horizon). See more details of Spice Isle Villas. |

Sample itinerary Day 1
Charter start at midday. Comprehensive chart briefing held in the restaurant near to the marina. Experienced skipper covers the yacht familiarization with the captain and mate onboard the yacht, complete paperwork at the office. Depart True Blue Bay and sail around the coast, past Grand Anse beach. Anchor off St George’s overnight and enjoy a sunset walk along the beach or a walk around the Carenage.
Day 2
Exhilarating day’s sail to Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou. Anchor amongst the local fishing boats and enjoy a stroll and drink ashore at one of the many rum shops, or try the floating bar in the middle of the bay! The Carriacou Yacht Club offers a good welcome to visitors.
Day 3
Breakfast and swim at Sandy Island, a flawless piece of sand where you watch the pelicans performing aerobatics around your boat as you eat. After breakfast and a snorkel, sail over to Union Island briefly to complete customs formalities to enter St Vincent and the Grenadines. Sail on north for a short distance and drop anchor at Saltwhistle Bay on Mayreau for the night. Saltwhistle Bay, a perfect horseshoe shaped palm-fringed beach, is surely one of the all time most beautiful anchorages. You could eat ashore tonight at the resort (dining Flintstones style on rock tables with little thatch roofs).
Day 4
After breakfast and maybe an energetic stroll to enjoy the fantastic view from the top of Mayreau take a short sail to the Tobago Cays and the highlight of your trip. Spend the day snorkelling the reef and exploring by dinghy, or just stay on board and marvel at the natural beauty of the place. For dinner, BBQ under the stars on board your yacht.
Day 5
After a leisurely breakfast, sail back to Union and head for Chatham Bay on the west side of the island, a beautiful deserted bay surrounded by hills. You could organize a beach barbeque with a local fisherman cooking freshly caught lobster – perfect Caribbean dining.
Day 6
Cruise over to Mopion, a perfect circle of sand in turquoise water with a single coconut thatch umbrella for shelter. After a snorkel and lunch sail the very short distance to Petit St Vincent, an exclusive private island resort with an excellent restaurant.
Day 7
Sail back to Grenada; make a stop at Isle de Ronde for lunch and a swim on the way. Head for Prickly Bay or Clarkes Court Bay on the south coast of Grenada. Enjoy a last dinner on board or book into one of the many local restaurants.
Day 8
Enjoy a leisurely sail back around to True Blue Bay for a noon finish. The Horizon staff will be ready to assist you whether you are departing the island or continuing your stay in one of the islands hotels or villas.
If you are interested in a skippered Grenadines sailing experience, see here for a suggested 7 night/8 day itinerary. |

This caters for charterers who would like to dine out in the evenings. It provides everything you need for seven breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
Split Provisioning
If you think you will eat dinner ashore on at least three nights during the week, this caters for 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, snacks and four dinners.

A preferred taxi driver will be at the airport to meet you, he will be familiar with your yacht and able to show you onboard and give a brief welcome introduction. |

Sports and Toys Grenada and The Grenadines provide an excellent arena for many non-motorised watersports so you may well want to hire some equipment to carry aboard your yacht during your charter. Consider space on board when it comes to something bulky like a windsurfer or a kayak, but many other sports are also available.
If you are learning to windsurf you can spend the whole day learning to get up and go without worrying about the cold water, but if you are a more experienced windsurfer then the reliable winds present a more challenging sail. There is a company based at Grand Anse beach with an excellent windsurfing instructor and they will also rent equipment from US$175 per week
Snorkel equipment is available for hire at the Horizon base at US$15 per week for the full set. If you have your own gear we do recommend that you bring it will you to ensure a good fit. The snorkelling is excellent especially at the Tobago Cays. Scuba Diving is also very popular and we recommend dives with reputable companies who will come to your yacht to pick you up in the morning for a wonderful diving experience. The dive companies will provide the scuba equipment for each dive. See here for our review on ScubaTech.
If you have never tried sea kayaking, the Grenadines offers an opportunity to explore small and secluded beaches and coves that cannot be reached without a boat. A two man kayak is available for hire at US$175 per week. |

Useful Information Cellular Telephones and Message Service
HYC provide a Digicel mobile telephone to all their clients. You then just have to purchase a phone card to make calls to HYC and home. If you wish to leave HYC’s telephone number with your friends and relatives for emergency contact, please use the local base number and not the toll-free reservation number.
Credit Cards
While HYC accept credit cards in payment for the deposit US$250.00 of your charter fee, you are asked to pay in cash or travellers’ cheques for any incidentals due at the base such as local government Cruising Permits, Hull Damage Waiver insurance, provisioning and other additional expenses as payment by credit card for these incidentals will incur a 5% service charge. While many establishments throughout the islands take credit cards, some do levy a surcharge and it is always a good idea to ensure you have extra cash or travellers’ cheques available.
Electrical Appliances
If your yacht has an inverter on board then you may use electrical appliances that you have brought with you (hairdryer, recharging batteries, etc) while sailing or at anchor. You may need to bring an adapter. Most of HYC’s yachts are 110V with US receptacles. All yachts have 12V sockets.
Environmental Issues
Please do not drop your anchor over coral and be very careful when snorkelling - even touching coral with hands and fins can destroy hundreds of years of growth. Also, do not remove any sea life, flora or fauna. Please ensure your that rubbish is disposed of properly (there are designated areas throughout the islands) and make sure that items are secure on your yacht while you are sailing and overnight, so they are not lost overboard.
Flight Information
Please see the ‘Flight’ section of our island guide to Grenada. When it comes to booking, we recommend that you contact your own travel advisors although HYC work closely with travel companies in both the USA and Europe and will give you contact details if you wish.
Guide Book
A complimentary “Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands” is provided to all clients that book direct with HYC. This information book written by Chris Doyle will help you plan your visit, aerial photographs and harbour charts are useful for navigating and where to go and what to do full of useful tips.
Luggage
Unfortunately luggage can sometimes be delayed into the islands so it is wise to pack a small overnight bag with essentials and, the most important thing, your swimsuit! Travel light and use soft-sided bags as they are easily stowed on your vessel.
Marina Services
The Spice Isle Marine Service is nearby with a chandlery store and haul-out facilities for repair work.
Rain Gear
It does rain in the Caribbean! We suggest you take light rain jackets with you though two are provided onboard each yacht.
Sunscreen
Bring a hat, good sunglasses and start with at least 30SPF sunscreen and please, no sun tan oil onboard the yacht as it stains linens, boat cushions and decks. Remember those after sun-soothers too! Should you actually get burnt find the Aloe Cactus to sooth away the heat.
Travel Insurance/Trip Cancellation Insurance
If you have to cancel your charter Horizon Yacht Charters is unable to offer refunds within 90 days of your charter start date unless they can re-sell your reserved dates. We therefore recommend that Travel Insurance or Trip Cancellation Insurance is purchased when making your booking. You can purchase your travel insurance on-line through Worldwide Travel Insurance. |
